Anyone replace silicone in fan clutch 3gen

Started having an overheating problem in my 97 SR5 4Runner. Only happens when stuck in traffic + hot ambient temps. Temp guage goes down when heater is turned on--no fun with 15 week old infant in the vehicle. Temp also goes down if you resume highway speeds.

With engine off but hot (temp needle at horizontal), fan spins VERY freely. I assume these all point to a bad fan clutch.

Dealer wants $$ for a new fan clutch, but I understand one can attempt to refill the silicone oil. Has anyone done this? Is it worth the hassle?

Thanks for the help.

Errol.

No, don't bother refilling a clutch like that, just go to a boneyard and pick up a used one for less $$$$.
Most of the time if it is out of fluid or if it is low then the seals are shot anyway.

Here's a write-up on refilling it if you want, but like Jamie said it's easier to get a used one, or an aftermarket new one. I think I got a new one for $80 or so a couple of years ago.

Thanks. Looks like it's not worth trying to rebuild.

Any special tips for replacement?

Simply unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one. If you have skinny hands you might be able to do it without removing the fan from the vehicle.
