Question Anyone else have a bad left knee and a 5-speed?

I busted my knee cap about seven years ago and it has never been quite right since. I have no problem with working the clutch. The problem is that when I'm not shifting the left knee rests against the armrest. It doesn't take long before the pain begins. I've gone through several square feet of 2-inch-thick foam cushions over the years. I haven't figured out a way to get the foam to stay in place while I shift. I've been using pieces long enough to hold in place with my left elbow while shifting. Any ideas how I can fasten some foam so that it doesn't block the controls on the armrest? Thanks for the help.

I'd say have a kneepad in the truck at all times, then strap it on as needed.

that sounds like a good idea... if anything you could construct your own with some good padding and industrial velcro.

i've had acl reconstruction on both my knees, my first was my right and while i was rehabing that, i had my 99 f150 which was a auto, my second was my left, and that was done while driving my 5 speed yota, and having my don joy knee brace on!!! sure makes driving it without all that a heck of alot easier!

Have tried the kneepad before and have driven with the brace on, too. They're okay until the weather gets hot. I found some really good velcro and some more foam. Going to try that method again. Thanks, folks.

If you start a gentle stretching program for your quads and hamstrings you may be able to ease your pain a little. Even though the pain feels like it is coming from the rest, I think it may be sub-patella inflamation aka PFPS, runner's knee, jumper's knee ....

My bad knee is on the right so I'm screwed either way. Anytime I'm on a long trip (>300 miles or so), my right knee starts to cramp up severely. Really wish I had cruise control for this but I end up driving with my left foot and stretching the right out as much as possible.

Have you considered fabbing up a custom armrest? Maybe hit the junkyard for an old one and try setting it up to relocate it farther back. Then perhaps you could build in a knee cushion forward of it so you could have a little more knee room, but still have some padding instead of resting it against the door panel?
Heck, as long as you go custom, you could relocate the power controls entirely and make an arm rest/knee pad combo any place or shape you want. Why do I have the theme music to Monster Garage playing in my head?

I have two bad knees. Mine get sore sometimes and especially the left. I keep one of those hinged knee braces with the donut in the pocket behind the drivers side. when it starts hurting I strap it on and it is all better:

Man, what a bunch of old foggies on the board!!! Actually, I've had 3 surgeries on my left knee (two arthroscopic, 1 ACL reconst.), and just picked up a manual FJ-40, should be interesting. My plan- convert it to an auto!
