I just watched the vids a bit ago.
Sounds very nice.

Eventualy I will do the mod, but it's on the back burner for awhile.
So many things to do...

Well, I've heard all the negative comments I think. Are there some secret emails floating about that I have yet to see? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about this. I just happen to prefer mine.

I can't imagine what the negative effects, if any, would be. I passed a smog check today. I don't use any more fuel with the mod than without it. No check engine lights have come on and I have gone thru more tanks of gas than I can count since installing it. I've run open intakes for over 20 years without problems.

I am pretty certain that the NA guys will benefit more from this mod than the SC guys, which is something I said on ODW before I ever posted a write-up about it.

The only down-side to this mod that I can see, and it's not really a down-side to me, but it is to some, is the potential increase in noise level.

Anyway, there will ALWAYS be a counter-point to whetver it is you do. I just hope the people who do try this are happy with it, but I have no control over whether they do or not.

Peace.

Hey Phil,

I've seen more than a few negative posts concerning the DeckPlate. But, I'm not really sure why my mod generates so much hate mail. If I have pissed anyone off, it was surely not my intention to do so. If someone wants an apology from me and if they deserve it, I'll gladly give it.

Maybe because I'm such a newcomer to these forums that I'm not sot supposed to have "discoveries" of this magnatude or popularity. I dunno. It certainly has stirred up some conversations, that's for sure. I sometimes wish I'd kept it to myself...

Peace
Dr. Z

I don't see any downside other than the noise. If you remove a silencer it will be louder... Duh! But its a truck and trucks make noise, deal with it. What other problems could there be? You are just letting the motor breathe more easily.

I'm pissed that it won't work on a carburator, (j/k) no silencer mod, no deckplate, no nothing, just exhaust and filter improvements. Maybe bigger valves and cylinder head work. No thanks. But its a 4 cyl 4x4 truck, not a sports car. It drives like a 4 cyl 4x4 truck. Slow but reliable and that's what I want. I can exceed the speed limit when I want and that's fast enough for me. Nearly 200,000 miles and still going strong, I can't complain.

Im going to look at Dr. Z's truck before I form an opinion. I might even put the Handheld tester on it and then compare readings with mine. (Time premitting). Ill see if I can come up with some "raw" data of sensor readings. (ie. MAF, Intake Air Temp, O2, and such).

Also, Ill have my Co-worker, who was a Toyota Master Technician Skills Contest participant give it a look over. He would be the only one that could re-inforce my opinion. He does alot with MR-2 and Supra clubs. He is a Turbo loving fool, and has done all sorts of involved modifications to the like. I think it qualifies him as sorta of an expert on Induction systems.

Dr. Z, possibly have access to a Digital Camera? Bring it Thursday night if you do.

I'm sorry if anyone was upset by what I said here. I have not been following this issue very closely since it won't help me. I haven't read the ODW threads since I found out what it was. I know nothing of secret e-mails about it but i'm sure they exist. I don't see anything wrong with the debate over this mod continuing in our open forums. No need for secret e-mails, speak your mind and lets hear what you think about this or any mod.

I want to thank the Doc for his creative ideas and his desire to share them. We all have a choice of what we want to do.

In this case, as in others, this mod seems to have positive benefits. If it doesn't work out for some reason, it's easy to change back without a lot of expense.

I certainly am happy with the results and for an old guy, that's saying something.

Those vids that were posted sound about like my truck does w/ the K&N FIPK . It sounds the same basically. As for the negative feedback, if it were true wouldn't it also apply to people who have K&N FIPK? My silencer has been long gone. About 15-20,000 miles ago to be somewhat exact. I have had no problems what so ever. I like the fact that it is loud. It is the only loud noise that I will have coming from the engine compartment for a while b/c the $$$ for the S/C isn't there for a college student. Keep trucking Dr. Z and thanks for spreading the mod. bug!

All,

I did this mod and agree it is louder, but worth doing. I currently have the large and small silencer boxes sealed off with JB Weld, but have the J-tube still open in the bottom (for any water, not that I am that concerned with it). I'm still looking for a new pipe or something to replace the darn thing.

Dr. Z was more than accomodating to all my questions both email and in the forum. I have nothing but kudos to give him.

Thanks again,
CB

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Jay, I do not own a digital camera. But I can get a disposable and scan the pics in later.

I haven't been keeping too many tabs on the silencer mod....I've just seen the pics and read some of the posts....This thread kinda peaked my interest, b/c of possibility of negative effects...I myself would not be able to do this mod, b/c I've installed the much discussed K&N FIPK. My question is....Isn't the Silencer Mod...about the equivalent of the bypass in the K&N FIPK and similar intake systems??? Just wondering.....and forgive me if this was already discussed....b/c like i've said I hadn't kept up with this.....

Yes, same idea as the K&N. I actually joked once with Dr. Z about calling this mod the "Poorman's FIPK" price being one of the biggest advantages to doing it...

Dr. Z came into the Dealership tonight. I begged a road test out of him after looking over the mods. I didnt get the time to spend screwing with it as Id have liked. I did hook the Toyota Handheld Tester to it prior to leaving. I looked immediatly at the MAF readings. They appeared normal, nothing really stuck out. Id prefer to make the readings of a Before and After method. No conclusive evidence in that department for tonight.

Well we headed out, he left the dealership as I was trying to navigate my way through the menus on the tester. Without warning he gave it all it had. Now, I have to say, I was not prepared for the acceleration. I feel I can make a honest subconscious opinion, derived from "seat feel", that his 4-runner is obviously faster than any 4-runner I have road tested. And I have driven many different ones. The sound was loud, however impressive.

The Silencer mod was definitally a clean looking install, hardly even looking modified at all. Nice work ! I was also fond of the Deckplate mod too.

All in all, I see nothing wrong with the alterations. I see nothing that could cause complications getting any warranty repairs completed. With the rare exception of replacing the MAF due to an overly oiled Air Filter. (Which in some cases can just be cleaned with soap and warm water. No Chemicals!)

Thanks for the Demo Dr. Z !

Hey Jay!

*Squeezes inflated Ego thru the door* :walk:

Yeah, it was fun. I will probably never forget the way you snapped your head up and the look on your face when I gunned it coming out of the parking lot.

We can do some more testing if you want. I would be up for that. It's a 30 second job to swap out the Intake Tube for the Silencer. Didn't you say you were going to run some tests on your 98 Taco too?

Anyway, I'll talk to you later. Thanks again for everything!

nice job doc!!! good to hear things went well...i am not sure if you read the post about the writeup for 96-98 for the intake silencer..but i found it to be a little confusing with all the jumping around...i am askin you or someone who knows the mod, to requirk the write up a bit..you know...first you explain how the mod is done ONE way..best way obviosly, then after the procedure...say " in step 3 this could be done instead of this" something to that extent...i'm really excited about doing this mod but like i have mentioned before, i found the write up a little confusing with all the different ways you explained...thanks and sorry for babbling!!!

p.s. Would anyone have the part numbers for parts 10 and 11 and 13 in the intake silencer mod?? it would make buyin the part from the dealer alot easier!!! thanks

Hi Chih,

First of all, thanks. Secondly, if the mod seems confusing to you, is there a friend or relative more familiar with automotive repairs who could read the write-up? Maybe they could help you with it?

I'm not saying "No" I won't re-write it. But did you print out the article as it is now, BOTH pages, along with all the enlarged pictures, and take it out to your truck to look at things? That can help you quite a bit if you are struggling to transform the written word and 2 dimensional pictures into a 3 dimensional reality.

I suggest you give that a try first if you have not already done so. If that fails to help, then go with my first suggestion of enlisting the help of a friend, relative or colleague who is more familiar with engine repairs, routine maintenance or upgrades. If you're still stuck after all that, then I will certainly take a look at ways to improve the article for the 96-98 trucks.

One thing to note here is that it is not just up to me to re-write the article. Corey has to be involved in formatting and uploading the end result onto the server so that you can see it. He and I both donate our time to do this. As it is, the article is in its 3rd or 4th incarnation already.

Hopefully, you can find a way to make the existing article work to make the mod a reality for you and your truck.

Sincerely,
Dr. Zhivago
