I just put in a new altenator and voltage regulator and my "charge" light is still coming on. The wires seem fine and are hooked up properly. Anyone have any clues on what the problem may be??

 

I don't know if it's a computer thing, but to clear the check engine light, the EFI fuse needs to be pulled (I think). Maybe it just needs to be cleared?

Have you checked the voltage output? Belt slipping? Is the regulator adjustable? If so is it adjusted properly?

What's your rig? OEM or aftermarket alt?

 

At cold startup the alternator should be charging to 14.4-14.5 volts at the front battery. After complete warm up it should be at 13.8 volts. PS - that external regulator comes in mighty handy for SPL comps....

Other than that do as Cebby says: Check all connections, check belt tension, check the pully bolt, and maybe reset the EFI

Everything checks out fine.

Perhaps there is something wrong with your battery? A dead cell or something maybe. What does your battery read after the truck has been off for a few hours?

 

i am having the same problem with my 82 4x4 let me know when you figure it out. there is a charge lamp relay under the dash it mite be that. i did not get around to changing it yet. i have a 85 engine in it and the timig chian guides broke so i have more important stuff to worry about

 

i had my guides let go on my 83, and was having the same alternator problem. do you guys have the sr5 gauge pod down at the floor? if so watch your gauge. mine was reading 14v but the charge light was on. with it running, pull the fuses, and it should clear up, of thats your problem. there is a relay under the dash, near the steering collum, if i remember correctly.

toyota parts dude, there are many things that are different when doing that job than what are in the shop manuals. there are also a lot of shortcuts, that dont compromise any gaskets, but i am sure you know of these. its a pretty easy job.

Pulling the fuses blanked out everything and I can't locate a relay.

I did pick up an official Toyota service manual and it states that the relay is only on the 55 amp and I have a 40. Any fresh ideas would be grateful.:cry:
