I just got my 99 inspected and they said it only has surface rust.
I was gonna sell it anyways, so should I park it out back and spray it with
salt water all winter until it rusts through, or try any sell it on ebay?

Aloha! i live in Hawaii. I have a 1998-V6-5Speed- ext.Cab. 2X4- Loaded with only 73K on it. I have Never Seen any Rust on my Frame or anyother place. I had it Rust Proofed when it was New with the Old Fashion Way of Drilling Holes and Shooting that Black Gooie Stuff All Over the truck, Including the Frame. God Bless Hunter37.

I got my 99 inspected in june, they said it was fine. However I didn't pick it up, my brother did it for me because I was working. Should I go back and challenge them on what constitutes as being okay? Also should I go to another dealership to see if they'll buy it back?

Just an update: my tacoma is being bought back, I'm getting just under eleven grand, not bad for a 97 with a almost quarter million miles on it. I will miss the hell out of that truck....

Man this is starting to make me nervous! I havnt had a chance to get mine looked at yet (looks OK to me...but I didnt get all the way under it or knock on it yet). I dont want to have to get rid of my truck! I dont like the larger Tacomas and dont like anything else in this market segment! Seems foolish to buy another 95-00 or even an 01-04 if this one goes (dont wanna be in the same sinking boat twice!)

I guess your satisfaction regarding this matter depends on the dealership. I had my '97 Tacoma checked out at my local dealership in Grand Forks, ND a few months ago, and they assured me that nothing was wrong, and that my frame was in great shape.

Fast forward to Thanksgiving. I brought her in to my home dealership in Burnsville, MN, and the first spot they checked, the little ball-peen hammer tap poked a hole in the frame. My guy had three other people he worked with do the same tap test in three other spots, and all three had the same results.

I was immediately given a '09 Corolla as a loaner, but I still had to borrow my sister's car because the loaner couldn't leave the state with me. A few weeks went by, I got a few phone calls from Toyota reps, and right before Christmas, I got a check for $9015.00. The funny part? I paid $9000 even for the truck five years ago.

So for Christmas, I bought myself a black '97 4Runner SR5 :-)

Except for the frame rust, my Tacoma was running strong. Five years, 130,000 miles, and no mechanical issues whatsoever.

I love Toyota :-)

dont report it to your insurance, cause they will report it as a salvage title and toyota wont accept it, just have someone tow it in

My dad had a 2000 Tacoma 4WD SR5 Extra Cab with the TRD package. He replaces his "company" truck every six years or so, so this recall thing came at a good time for him. He got a little over 18k for it when they bought it back a few months back. It had a little less than 50k, which is pretty low miles for a 2000. Put it all towards a 2008 Tacoma Extra Cab 4WD with the special TRD Off Road Package. And they gave him a prepaid maintenance package in lieu of the extra $1,000 from TMC for buying a new Toyota

I worked at a dealership over the summer, and someone brought one in that had really bad front end damage and we still took it in, i think the guy got like 13K for it.

What happens if you buy a 95-00 Taco now? Say I run down south to grab one in good shape... can i bring it in to the stealership to get the extended warranty? or am I s.o.l. because i purchased it after the recall?

I have been wanting one of these generation Taco's for some time now, and I don't wanna screw myself thinking that the extended frame warranty applies to me when it really doesn't. I'm not looking to turn a big profit on one immediately... but if, in 5 years, there's holes all over the place from driving in the salt-laden VT hills, I wanna keep my @$$ covered.

lemme know what you guys think/know.
Thanks

If you do end up buying one look for a 2000 since the warranty lasts 15 years. Im not sure if toyota will take it. Or get a 01-04 since i heard those frames are starting to get looked at, but Toyota hasn't made a recall on those years, but probably soon will.
