Adjusting front wipers / motor?

I had to remove the wiper motor from my firewall and take it off of the rods that turn the wiper arms. Seems I did a bone head thing and unbolted the 12mm nut that holds the little bracket to the motor that cycles the rods, instead of disconnecting the rods from the bracket. Are you following still? Today I re-installed everything and the wiper arms immediately go in a downward motion instead of the usual upward sweep on the windshield. I adjust the arms and they only go halfway up the windshield and then fall way down on the cowl. I've tried taking the motor off and re-adjusting the bracket that cycles the rods and I still get the same half sweep and then drop on the cowl. It's like they never return to their "home" position. Is there any info out there about how to adjust the wiper motor to get it to 1) do the normal wiper sweep and not what I described above and 2) get the wipers to automatically return to the "home" position once the wiper lever is turned off?

What did I do?!!!

Thanks.

happened to me once and could never fix it.. went to a mechanic and he did some tinkering with the position of the rods... dunno exactly what he except that he just worked on the rods.
