Adding Radio Under Stereo

I was looking into adding a HAM radio under the radio in my 98 tacoma. Right now theres just a little cubby hole deal down there that is easily removed. My question is how would the mounting work with the radios?

I have a pioneer headunit and am looking into this HAM:

Its just a little smaller than technical DIN specs.

Any suggestions welcome

There is a bracket that holds the stock or after market headunits with screws that insert from the sides. If you can find a way to mount your second unit from the side with screws the way any old aftermarket HU does, then you'll be fine.

I would not recommend mounting it where your looking at for 2 reasons.

With that radio mounted in the dash the heat sink will not be able to get any air to cool it and it will overheat and burn out the finals.

The other problem is the radio is going to be a little over a foot away from your trucks computer and the RF from the radio WILL get into the computer. I found this out the hard way several years ago on my 01.

I have mine there, but wouldn't mind moving it in favor of a double din touch head unit. I can imagine it does get hot in there, the fan is typically running after being turned on for awhile. If you choose to, I just used longer crews and spacers on one side to make up for the space difference. The piece on the left is a hunk of black ABS plastic to hide the hole.
