99 4Runner Rear Defroster

Hi All,

A friend of mine has a 99 4Runner. The backend got smashed by a tree, and the insurance company did kind of a crappy job fixing it. I was able to fix a couple things easily, but the rear defroster still is not working. One thing I noticed is that the Rear Window control unit used to be the Blue 85930-35020 unit. The current one in there is the Orange box (However I believe Orange is also appropriate for 99?). The pinout on these two boxes are different, and the wires appear to be different colors too.

I'm wondering if parts from a 4Runner different than 99 were used, and it was possibly a year that didn't have a rear defroster? Or did all years come equipped with this?

Anyway, if anyone has any insight I'm all ears, and if someone could tell me which color wire on various years is for the rear defroster that would be great so I can check for voltage.

Thanks!

I have the wiring diagram for '98, '99, and '01 4Runners. PM a good email address and I can send them to you. The '98 looks simpler, I don't know if they are interchangeable.

In '99, Toyota redesigned the rear liftgate control system to use a single "multiplex" control wire for communication of commands from the cab to the back. This makes the electronics completely incompatible with the earlier direct controlled modules used in '98 and earlier. The correct module for '99 is usually the 85930-35060 which is orange and for models with keyless entry. 85930-35020 which is blue is for models w/o keyless entry, a base model very rare in North America.) Does this truck have keyless entry from the factory? If it does, does it work? Answer that, and we can start to try to figure this out.

In any case, neither of those is from the completely incompatible pre-multiplex '98 and earlier system.

How does a tree smash a backend? Neat trick....

Thanks a lot for the replies... The 4Runner does in fact have keyless entry which is still working.

Basic summary: It used to have the blue box, and now it has the orange. The pinout on these two boxes is definitely different and all the wires are different colors. The only thing that is not working is the rear defrost.

fierohink just sent me some wiring diagrams so I'm going to take a peek at those!

I think you are barking up the wrong tree. If Rear DEF is the ONLY thing not working, you have the right part installed. Does the warning light come on when you turn on the rear defroster but the frost remains, or is it completely dead?
