Hello everyone!
Found this site searching for my problem, did a search but did not find any info.
I have a 98 Tacoma 4 x4 that has this intermittent problem of the starter continuing to turn after the truck is running. Even after turning the key off it continues to crank. It happened once last year, then happened again yesterday. Any ideas on what it could be? Or do I just take it it for service?

Pull the solenoid plunger out and clean it out if dirty and also check the copper contacts. If worn unevenly, they can cause the plunger to get cocked in the bore of the solenoid and stick on:

I've experienced this problem only when the starter/solenoid has gotten very wet...deep puddles or slush. I need to clean it up. Thanks Roger.

It's likely is a sticking solenoid, but you're going to want to pull the starter no matter what. You can disassemble/service it yourself or take it to an auto-electric shop to be serviced (they are usually much cheaper than buying a new or rebuilt starter).

 

Same thing was happening to me. I would have to pull the positive terminal to get the starter to stop. I removed the starter, went to a local shop and they replaced the small bearing in the back, a whole new plunger assembly with contacts, all for $38. I would just take it to a good local starter/alternator shop and it shouldn't cost much. I found all the parts I needed online but by the time I purchased them it was gonna be more than what the shop charged me.
