I just scored this 98 Tacoma 5spd 4wd w/380k miles for a low low price of $1. It was having shifting problems, he was told it needed a new transmission. It doesn't need a transmission, just a new clutch. The goober that replaced the clutch about a year ago put the disc in backwards and didn't tighten the bellhousing bolts. Over the course of a year the bolts have backed out, the tranny began separating from motor. I think for a few hundred for a new clutch, slave/master cylinder and a good bath and tlc I will have another 500k+ mile truck.

 

Just don't forget to adjust the valves and replace the cracked exhaust manifold. Then, if you're lucky, you'll have a 500k truck.

I already have replaced the exhaust manifold, upper and lower ball joints, shocks, struts, radiator and universal joints(all completed in the last year). This was my wife's cousin's truck, he said he wasn't spending another dime on it. It also has almost brand new bf Goodrich at's as well. I will keep it updated.
