98 limited awd??? Confused

Ok first i want to start by saying i have a 2000 limited with the awd multi mode transmission, now i have recently bought my fiance a 98 limited only because i saw that it had the round 4wd button on 4wd lever and i read the owners manual that said it could be used when raining or on dry pavement, just like my 2000, so thats why i bought it. Now the question seems to be if it is actually the same as my 2000, i can engage it the same as my 2000 the only thing i have noticed is that at very low parking lot speeds the rear acts as if it is locked and the tire on the inside of the turn is jumping. Which leads me to believe its just 4wd hi not awd. My 2000 only does that when i engage the rear elocker. Any comments or answers would be great, i just dont want to mess up the gearing if its not supposed to be driven in the rain or dry pavement (which the manual with the car says it can). Thanks

And yes when you look at the shift pattern on the top of the 4wd lever there is a difference between my 2000 and the 1998. Thats why i checked the owners manual first.

Well if when turning it is binding then something is locked and it is not supposed to be used on dry pavement. Unless the prior owner installed a locker of some sort that is.

awd mode is 4 green lights on the dash no center light
4wd is all 4 green lights on dash and center red light lit

put in 2wd mode, neutral, jack stands in rear, raise rear end up both tires free
parking brake off

can you turn both rear wheels by hand ?

no, parking brake stuck ?
no, possible center diff issue ?

yes,

does turning one wheel, make the other move in the opposite direction ? yes OK
no, possible stuck rear locker ?

right. 1998 had no AWD only the 1999+ Limited (which is what I haz)

so your GF must have a 1999 Limited, or no multimode (awd)

1999 limiteds were made and sold at least since oct 1998
