98 4runner v6 auto won't shift into gear.

Everything was working well. I went to the store, came out and tried to leave but it would not move. Engine turns on and all, just revs. When I put it into park I get a grinding noise when going from reverse to park but not any other gears.

Also, it has transmission fluid.

Any clue what is going on?

You say it has fluid but is it at the correct level? If it's low it could act like this. Other than fluid level I would think a solenoid or possibly some part of the valve body is stuck. Does the shifter feel normal? Doesn't feel loose like the linkage is broke/disconnected does it?

Any codes (CEL on)?

Maybe the Neutral/Park/Safety Switch located on the passenger side of the transmission is dead. I have never heard of one failing myself on the 4 runner.
