98 4runner motor problems

For about a week when i start it up to go to work it kind of acts like its going to stall after i get going its fine, last night on my way home when i would give it a little gas it started makin a clickin sound like somthing smackin in the fan, when i went to hit the highway and gave it more gas it got real loud and started makin all kinds of sound, like a chugging sound almost like air pumpin. any one have any ideals what it might be?

Might also help to let us know the engine...4cyl/6cyl? Just a thought.
Auto?Manual?
Also, last time since tuneup and by chance do you have an aftermarket air filter?

When is the last time you change the engine oil? I hope it's not dried out.
