97 4runner needs ring and pinion?

I have a 97 4runner with 193k currently..I have some bad whining when accelerating coming from the rear. I have been told its the ring and pinion from a good friend of mine. So obviously it needs to be fixed asap. Just mainly looking for some advice from you all as what to do. What set I should buy new or used or maybe you all think it may be something else. This is my first 4runner and learning these vehicles as I go. Thanks in advance Tony

Have you had it professionally diagnosed or your friend just thinks its your R & P? I'd be certain before I assumed I diagnosis on sounds alone.

In the 4 hours between your posts did you do any research?

well if you get this done you will need to take it to a rear end or gear shop to set it up because it is a very important part and will screw it up if not done properly!!!!! I work on my own truck for every thing but this and alignment easier and better to have a pro do it and you get a warranty!!!!

And stay away from Genuine Gears brand. Get Precision or OEM. The carrier might just not be set up and need a rework too.
