Ok, everyone can bag me about being a newbie...but this site is SO FREAKING BIG, that even with the same searches at different times, I get different results, and I swear to God guys, my eyes are about to pop out of my skull.
I will make this short and sweet; feel free to PM or flame me, I don't care anymore. I have a STOCK 97 4Runner Ltd, with only "mod" are the running boards removed. I NEED TIRES. SO, I am looking at upgrading to the 285 75 16's. I can live with SOME rubbing, and this is my DAILY DRIVER. I only get offroad (for now) when someone says " nuh uh, you can't make it". Kinda like the Redneck and the big red button. ANYWAY, I can do some trimming and grinding (as long as it doesn't LOOK like I took a sawzall to it...like I said...DAILY DRIVER) on body and arms...but what I really want to know is: How LIVABLE are these tires on a stocker? I mean, no lift (yet) at all...but very little offroading (yet). I started reading the threads at like 8pm, listening to the bridge collapse news in Minneapolis, and now it's 1am. I hope you guys understand I TRIED to answer this question without bothering you with an old topic. And I think others may be in my boat on this. Oh, one more thing...can I get a new speedo gear? Or is it minimal at say 60, 70 and 80 miles per hour? I don't need anymore tickets. YOU GUYS ROCK! LOL Ok. I know that didn't work. haha

you'll be dealing alot more than SOME rubbing with stock suspension and 285's. even more so with stock wheels. unless you just plan on driving straight all day and possibly dealing with torn inner sidewalls...sure slap on some 285's and show some pics of your truck when you get home.

i'll give you a hint to your answer though. it starts with a T, and ends with a wosixtyfiveseventyfivesixteen.

 

You need 2" inches of lift to accomodate the 285s.

That being said, it seems you guys like the BFG's and the Nittos. Again, mainly use on the road, but I sure do like to drive over stuff, and would like a more aggressive tread and sidewall than the crappy city slicks on there right now. Would the All Terrains or the Terras be mind numbing on a drive from Dallas to Colorado? We are going to Humboldt Peak in a couple of weeks, and am trying to decide if we should take my 4Runner or my friend's Xterra. his is a 2WD, but the ride to Blanca Peak last year was pretty darn smooth. Recommendations?

265/75r16 should fit but at compression I don't know if they will rub on a 3rd gen

 

Lift two inches and install the 285's--You might also consider the Yokohama Geolander MT Plus. Been reading up and they get great reviews also.

If you're mostly on-road, get some Bridgestone REVO's (either 265/70 or 265/75) or Michelin LTX A/T (they come in 265/75 only on 16" rims). The LTX's will last longer, but the REVO's will perform better on and off road. LTX's do well, too. The REVO's will be slightly cheaper.

 

heh. I beat X to the tire question. I drove from Washington DC to Dallas to Phoenix on BFG's. No they are not mind-numbing. I'm sure the Terras aren't either. You'll be fine with any AT in my opinion.

I think you got the answer you were looking for regarding 285's. I've got 3" up front, did some trimming, removed the mud guards and I still get rubbing occasionally.

 

I guess where I became confused was I assumed the 265-75-16's were stock when I bought it used...turns out they trimmed out some wheel well, and they have never rubbed. so that's going to be the magic size for NOW anyway...will new tread fill the space out even more?

 

Yah new tread will really help it out. My old toyos compared to my new ones is one hella difference

 

Whoa, those Geolanders look tough! I am going to look into those more I think...
