97 4Runner Lift/Wheel/Tire question

My 1st Post

I've finally decided to upgrade my stock 97 4Runner. I have narrowed it down to the following: Current setup is Stock Height w/ 31x10.5/15 wheels.

Planned Upgrade:
- Daystar Lift Kit (2.5" LIFT)
- 16x8 American Racing-Mojave-Teflon Wheels
- 285/75/16 (Nitto Terra's or BFG AT's)

Any suggestions/Comments? (Bad Idea? Will not Work? Good to go?)

To fit 285's with no rubbing your going to need a body lift.

Yes, you'll get rub..but it depends on the tire, too. My 285/75/16 Toyo MT's rub because of the knobs on the shoulder heit the upper arms..they clear though with my 2.5lift. My BFG's AT's had better fitment. I thought a bl didn't help with clearance of the upper arms??

Some 285s will fit but you have no clearance for anything and even small bumps will cause the wheels to hit the fenders while driving. 265/75/16 is the biggest the stock suspension can fit with no problems.

"Daystar Lift Kit" This should add about 2" - 2.5".
Shouldn't this be enough?

This is with that same lift and 285/75/16's. I had to do minor triming of the fender and shaving of the upper arms. 265's perfect for stock, but 285 definately lift..but on droop you will rub depending on tire and rim/wheel backspacing. I'm currently waiting my BL.Name:  IMG_0030.jpg

I have a 98 4runner Ltd. with a Revtek 3" "leveling kit." I’m running 285x75x16 Nitto Terra Grapplers and 16x9 Helo Maxx 8 wheels. As JDIZZYDUB mentioned, I too had some minor trimming to do on the fenders. However, the trimming is on the inside of the fender and is unnoticeable to others. Like X-AWDRIVER said…and as you can see in JDIZZYDUB’s pics…the 285’s fill the fender, leaving little room. However, I’ve been wheeling a number of times over rough terrain and have had no problems bottoming out. The rubbing I experienced before trimming was due to sharp turns. If I had it all to do over, I would have went with a bit wider rim and a smaller tire (265). I prefer the look of a bit wider rims (just peeking outside of the fender flares) and a bit more space between the tire and the wheel well (showcasing the lift). In my opinion, having a lift and 285s completely filling the fender well is like having nice legs but never wearing short shorts. Although I do like the added width/traction the 285s offer, as soon as they wear out I’m going back to the 265s I was running. I may stay with the Nitto’s—they’ve been an excellent tire in Utah snow, mud and rain and have an aggressive look for an A/T. But, I may go a bit beefier next time with an M/T.

Go with the Nittos. I just traded (well a year ago) my BFG ATs for Nitto Terra Grapplers and they do much better on and off road.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be prepared for a little trimming/shaving.
The Backspace on the Wheels are 4.5 with 0 offset. Hopefully no problems with the 8" wheel.

Jdizzydub, that thing is Cherry. Just the look I'm going for.

I do like the look of the Nitto's. Wonder if they have the same guarantee as the BFG's.

What's the guarantee of the BFGs?

I have the replacement certificates from Discount which covers pretty much anything on or off road. BFGs are great off road but the Nittos are comprable and for the cost of the BFGs I could've bought a 5th Nitto. The Nittos are much better on the street and in the rain and this is from my experiences.

Sounds like the same guarantee. Also the BFG's are everywhere, might have to wait a few days to order the Nitto's. You can pretty much walk in to 7-11 and find the BFG's.

With that said.. pretty sure I'm going with the Nitto's.

Check out toyteclifts.com they sell OME (old man emu) coils, its a australian company. This is what im running and love it, it seems like alot of people run this lift on the forum. Its a great price!

Im mainly thinking that if i was you i would rather get a 3" lift over the 2.5" lift in the long run. Im running the 3" OME lift and I still want more hight, my plan is to get a 1" body lift soon.

You will still have rubbing issues running 285/75/16 tires with the stock yota rims.

Exactly what Zberch was saying...i wish I went bigger with my lift, but I was going the inexpensive way and grow with it. I've got crusier coils on now and I'm trackin down some tundra coils for the front. Still waitin for my BL in the mail.

If I went w/the 3" OME lift and either. BFG AT or the Nittos, what do I "trim?"

It's done. Ordered and Paid for. Just have to go pick everything up.

I ended up going with the daystar 2.5" front and rear because of price. I got the best deal possible (free). The choice was made for me.

Also changed my mind again and went with the BFG's.

Thanks everyone for your input. I love this site.

I should have everything bolted up next week. I'll post some b4/after pics when I get a chance.
