Exclamation '96 Taco transmission problem

Forgive me for I have not had the opportunity to learn much about transmission and such.

Yesterday, my roommate called me from the side of the road in his '96 Taco 4wd 3rz-fe 5spd saying he had a problem. I get there and he describes the event: He went to down shift from 2nd to 1st when coming to the stop light. The truck bucked violently, he heard a clunk and now it feels like he has no clutch just about. I tried to drive it. Now you have to let the clutch pedal out almost all the way before it starts to move the truck, and it barely does until you let it up entirely. Even then it doesn't feel 100%. He was able to drive it back to the house but he took it easy. It wasn't slipping under load like a bad clutch disk.No noticeable odd noise coming from down there. All fluids are good. I would like to get some ideas before we dig into it. We are planning on at least draining the tranny fluid this week to see if there are any chunks of something. Any ideas would be great. Thanks guys
