96-97 brush guard fitment issues?

96-97 brush guard fitment issues?
i found a brush guard for sale and the owner of it tells me that it wont fit a 96, only the 1997 and on models. Why would this be? what would it take for it to fit my 96 4runner? Will it fit my 4runner or do i need to keep shopping. Thanks in advance
