96 4Runner hesitation @ 2k RPM on highway
Hello everyone. I am new to the forums and I'm sorry it took me so long to discover yotatech. What a huge wealth of information! This will definitely be among my most used bookmarks.
Anyway, I have a ’96 4Runner with the 6 cyl engine (5VZ I assume). It idles fine and there are no drivability issues until I get on the freeway and reach approximately 2100-2200 RPMs. Once that happens, the truck hesitates a bit… almost feels like it’s missing. If I give it more fuel and get past 2200 RPMs, things get smooth again. If I give it less fuel and drop below 2100 RPM, again things are smooth. Interestingly enough, I don’t notice any hesitation as I accelerate through 2200 RPMs during city driving; I really only feel this at highway speeds.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Is the hesitation in the engine or does it feel transmission related? Secondly, does this happen at 2100-2200 RPM when you're accelerating through your gears or just at freeway speeds? I've heard people having issues with torque converter lock/unlock at that RPM range but that's usually during acceleration, not on the highway.

Thanks for the quick responses. Very much appreciated.
It is definitely engine related (as opposed to tranny)
I do not feel any hesitation as I travel through 2000-2200 RPM during city driving. Highway speeds only.
Check engine light hasn't luminated so nothing to check yet.
I am guessing it's something electronic but just can't figure it out.

2000 toyota 4-runner Hesitation during Highway Acceleration
2000 toyota 4-Runner Hesitation during highway Acceleration. It started today, as soon as I got to 45 mph or then again around 65 it starts to falter bit and acts very eratic. I can however accelerate those speeds and cruise at 70 and not have any problems? Its those in between speeds thats getting me and it just started today. Idles fine, drive around town, not a prob, but once I get to highway speeds is when I have issue, just like the guy that posted before me and said the same thing with the 96 4runner. Please help..
