i have a 1996 toyota 4runner 4x4 v6. my 4x4 will not engage all of the time. when i pull the lever into 4x4 i can hear a click coming from the ecu location. but it may engage one out of twenty times.
any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

You may need to check the transfer case switch. this is what gets picked up by the 4wd shifter and it it is not properly set (or may be has become loose), wire from switch to transfer case may loose as well. I had an issue about two months ago but it was a situtation that was a defective transfer case switch just flat out not working and I could not get any 4wd. I'd check that switch first. If it is engaging sometimes then I would be looking for loose wires, loose switch or maybe even a defective switch that is on the verge of complete failure. The switch is a $92 part.
