Hi, my 1995 SR5 has developed a fuel smell that I've traced to the charcoal canister. The fumes come out from the tube that exits the bottom of the black round canister. This tube dangles and looks like it was once attached somewhere, but might have broken or slipped off. Haynes provides no clues, other than it is the canister exhaust.

Where does this tube attach to?

I may replace the canister, since the vehicle is at about 150K anyway. Can anyone recommend a source for a reasonablly priced replacement. My jaw hit the floor when I got the price from the dealership. $300+

I may be wrong but I think the hose on the bottom of the cannister just vents to the atmosphere. (it ain't attaced to anything, just hangs there)

 

That's what I'm starting to thing too. Can anyone else confirm this. Should there be a very strong smell of gas coming out of this dangling hose? I'm thinking that is a sign that the canister is in need of change.

 

I can't check mine until the wife gets back on Thursday night, but I have 211K on mine, and can't imagine having to replace the cannister at only 150K.

Since it's an emissions device, it may be covered under a diferent, longer warranty.

Blow 25psi air through the A port while holding the B-port. Clean that thing out.

If you blow down through B port while holding A and it comes out the bottom, then you need to replace your charcoal canister.

Blow 25PSI air through the A port while blocking the B port.

Blow 25PSI air through the B port while blocking the A port, looking for air coming out the bottom exhaust port. If air does come out the bottom the canister is toast.

Is the strong gasoline smell from the bottom normal?

 

It's IS normal if the canister needs to be cleaned (25psi air)
you are correct in your post.
the left post (as looking from the front of the engine) is "A"

 

I've never cleaned mine...Is this something I should do as part of regular maintenance?
