92 4x4 xtra cab using oil...

My 92 4x4 3.0 V6 has 169K and uses(no leaks) about 1 qt of oil every 3K(OCI w/ GTX 10w30). I believe it stems from running hot back at about 80K due to cracked head gaskets that were recalled. Otherwise it's still runs great and has no other issues. Will running a heavier weight slow the consumption (perhaps a 15w40)? Thanks!

I use 10w40 in mine, I had too much valve clatter and leaking around the valve cover seals with 10w30. if it doesn't get much below freezing often where you live, 15w40 should work fine.

what brand 15w40 were you lookin at? make sure that it's also rated SL for gas engines, as some are only for diesel engines.

1 quart per 3,000 miles is not abnormal for an engine that has 169k on it

Good question. My 92 xcab 3.0, with 173,000 also burns oil. I'm not sure at what rate but every time I check it I have to had oil. I also have valve noise. Will running a heavier oil quiten them?

Add a quart of 10w40 to the 10w30 when you change oil or use the 10w40 to add as needed. That consumption is not bad at all so no need to over do it just a little fine tuning is needed.

Crap man, my 91 uses about twice that much oil. I wouldn't wory about it. Once you have a big white could of smoke coming out the exsost untill it warms up, then you should wory. My dad drove a honda that did that to the point that it ran on 90w gear oil before it finally stoped going compleetly but that's another story.....

Delo is known for diesel engine service. Dont know about the sl rating....it may meet those specs. but it is a high detergent crude based oil. be careful.
