85 Front Axle Service

Any of you 85 & below straight axle owners ever performed the axle service on your trucks? Is this something that should be left to the professionals or can i perform this service? And what down time am i looking at?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

It is not overly technical but it is quite time-consuming, especially the first time. You need a couple key tools but you should have them on hand anyway if you have an '85:
  • Brass drift punch for cone washers
  • Good pair of external snap-ring pliers (the kind with a wide, flat tip)
  • 54mm (2-1/8") hub socket
  • M8-1.25 bolt ~2" long (thread it into the axle when re-installing the snap ring)
