I had the unfortunate experience of waking up at 1:30 AM last night to a phone call from a friend who had sunk his giant F150 up to the bumpers in a giant puddle (lake). I take my 85 4Runner out there and hook up some chains to the front hook on my truck and his rear bumper. Long story short, I couldn't pull him out (after all, it's a 22re stock and it weighs probably 1/2 as much as his mud sunk F150).

Strangely enough, I used 4Low for the first time since I bought the truck. In reverse it was great, really grippy. However, when I shifted to Drive in 4Low, the right front wheel area would make a 'clunk' or 'thump' noise upon a full rotation.

Is there something I'm missing here in shifting from reverse to drive in 4Low?

Better yet, what could be broken?

I would get under there and check all of the bolts that hold anything at all.
Springs, shackles, ubolts, driveshafts, tranny mounts, crossmember, lugnuts...you get the idea. Put a wrench on everything.
Do you still get power at both front wheels in D?

 

That I'm not too sure about. Here's the thing. I don't see it as a loose bolt problem because in every other setting (2H and 4H) I get a smooth ride in Drive and Reverse. It's only 4Low - Drive where I get the noise. I guess it could have something to do with my hub not engaging on that side? But then again, how would that explain the smooth ride in 4High?

hmm. . . i'm not experienced enough yet to diagnose this one

Sounds like a potential transfer case issue. I'd find a safe, open area and put'er in 4L, and drive slowly with my head out the window or the door open to try and isolate the source of the noise.
