you know the 5.5 quarts includes that... its all one system and the oil goes into the filter as its pumped through to clean the oil....

edit, btw yes the $83 is way too much imo... even for synthetic
i have a tacoma with the 3.4 and it takes 6 qts with a new filter.. 5.5 was not enough

i use syn and i change mine at 5k miles to 6k miles.. you can go up to 7500 miles if you had to,

What is this expensive oil you guys speak of? When I plan on doing my own changes, I pick up the oil from Napa when its on sale for around $1.50 a quart, and $5 for a gold filter. $14 oil changes!

Thats what I did when I was doing changes on my '98 about every 3 weeks.

My local Toyota dealer charges 25.95 (with a coupon) for a regular oil & filter change; but that's for up to 5 qts; so it's a little more for a 4runner.

If you trust your oil for that long you are nuts. Yes I know AmsOil is good. I run it in my ATV that runs at obscene rpm's all day long. But it will still get dirty and require changing. I wouldn't run any oil (or filter), no matter how good it is, for more than 5000 miles, but hey it's your engine.

I don't see it worth it to run with synthetic oil, but I do change my oil fairly frequent. About 2500 miles, never over 3000.

On the side note, I used to have a 2000 BMW M5. Oil change on that sucka is $190.

my mom has an m3 and they tell her to change it every 7500 to 15k miles and yes they use the mobile 1 syn 7500 or 15k blend... to me thats just too long. i change at 5k as much as possible but its nice to know i can toss in a few thousand more just incase something happens and i cant change the oil...

does anyone of have pics of motors that used synthetic compared to ones that didnt??

Amsoil has oil you can run 30,000 miles on. I left it in for 12,000 miles this winter and it was as clean as new when it came out. Unless you're revving the ลลลล out of your ride or pulling loads, I see no reason not to go 8-15,000 between oil changes, especially if you're paying a dealer to do it.

I live in Tucson, AZ so we have a Costco. I get a discount on membership through my job so I'll buy it from there from now on.

I changed it tonight without incident, it took 6 quarts total, adjusting for a slight drop on the dipstick after I turned the engine over and rechecked. The only thing that was a bit messy was getting the old oil filter off. It leaked a fair amount and I had to clean the top of the skid plate off. I was expecting it to be worse because I was under the impression the skid plate was in the way of draining the oil via the plug, but mine has a large hole to let the oil pass. I must have gotten something I read on here twisted to think the skid plate was in the way on 3rd gens.

Every Wal-Mart sells Mobil 1 Full synthetic in the common viscocities for about $22 for a 5 quart jug.

If you're going to spend 7 bucks a quart, you should get a better oil like Amsoil or German Castrol. Mobil 1 isn't even a class IV synthetic anymore like it used to be. They degraded their base stock to a class III oil a little over a year ago, and didn't drop their price at all to reflect the drop in oil quality. It's still good oil(albeit very thin for it's weight rating), but not up to par with the other oils in that price range.
