5ve-fe timing question

Alright, Im in the middle of replacing the timing belt/ water pump in my 4 runner. I am at the point of aligning the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys to top dead center, and noticed the camshaft pulleys are advanced about 15 degrees. With the crankshaft at 0deg they are both rotated clockwise.

The 4runner runs, drives, and passes emissions the way it is, but is it possible the last time someone replaced the timing belt they skipped teeth on the camshafts/crankshaft? Or is this really a non issue, and I should just reassemble as is?

I did a search and all I was able to find was someone with a camshaft rotated 180 deg out. Any advice is appreciated

Align both cams and crank to TDC.

If you don't have the FSM, get one from the link in my sig.

Proper TDC in post 6 and 12:

How's your fuel economy? I gotta figure your power stroke has to be less than optimal. I agree with above--put it right.

Try rotating crank shaft a few times should put everything at tdc. If not it cut off belt and align each on by hand and when they're close enough the new belt will get them where they need to be.

forrest232, OP said that the crank is at TDC and the cams are off a bit...rotating the crank will not bring the cams into alignment. Since it's a non-interference engine OP can rotate the cams clockwise until they are both at TDC.

Once the belt is on and the tensioner pin pulled, rotate the crank two full revolutions clockwise and inspect that cams and crank are all back to TDC per the FSM.

Is that with the crank keyway pointing straight up? It should be pointing to the midline of bank 1 head. Use a factory belt and its a no-brainer. They're marked. The dashed line goes to the mark on the crank gear
