Were you in 4wd? Could have been a speed warning?

You sure it wasn't the traction contol indicator? If you kicked down and it started spinning, that light would have went on for about 5 seconds, or until you got grip again.

Mine has done this a couple of times as well. I find these trucks break electrically and then fix themselves all the time like the gas gauge for example.

mine has done that a total 5 or 6 times over 150,000 miles

ignore it

it does it only when super cold outside. it happens, and I say damn....then it goes away and everything fine, so I consider it a harmless gremlin

okie81-i'm not sure if it was the traction or not. I haven't ever seen it do that before, but that could have been it. It was a rain/snow mix but the road was only wet. I didn't feel the tires slip, but its possible. Does the 4wd indicator flash on and off for traction control or is there another indicator??

bigbluepile-no i was only in 2wd.

thanks everyone for your input. it hasn't done it again and i was just hoping it wasn't anything serious or to do with the drivetrain or 4wd.

Just had this same issue with my 99 limited 4runner with 98k on it. Driving on the interstate. It was about 85 degress outside. I was driving for about an hour with the cruise set at 75mph. Then all of a sudden, I hear a beeping. Then I notice my 4wd and center diff lock flashing.

Per the toyota EWD, (2) Shift limit control
When the vehicle speed is over 100 km/h, shift change to H4 or H4L mode can not be made. The vehicle speed signal is input to TERMINAL 3 of the 4WD ECU. At this time, the 4WD indicator light and the center diff. lock indicator light flashes, and the buzzer installed in the 4WD ECU goes on. This condition can be canceled by decelerating the vehicle speed to below 100 km/h, or by selecting H2 mode.

I pulled off at an exit and it stopped beeping. Tested 4wd select but, and 4H and 4L with the center diff lock and all engaged and disengaged flawlessly. Got back on the highway and it a few minutes later it started flashing and beeping. Did that for a few minutes then stopped. Then on the way home same thing. Pull off at a rest stop again. Test 4wd again. It was fine. Got back on the highway and it was fine. Anyone able to resolve this issue. Im thinking it could be a short in the 4wd computer.

Also, from my knowledge, traction control wasnt put on til 2001 and 2002. the 99 and 2000s didnt have VSC, but I could be wrong on that
