4runner wheel size?

I've got a question that nobody so far has seemed to be able to answer. i have a '97 4runner sr5 v6 that came stock with the e-locker and 265/ 70/16 tires. after the first set wore out, i put some dueler a/t revos on (275/70/16) and they were great, but now i want switch to a different rim/tire combo. i was wondering if i could use a 15inch rim, or if id have to go with a 16. my friend has a lifted 84 p/u with 33x12.5r15's on it,and when i tried to put them on my 4runner, the rim have enough space to clear the brake caliper. ive read reports that some 15 work and some dont, and that it depends on if theyre steel or aluminum and all sorts of other things.

im looking into the rockcrawler 152 series (beadlock look-alike) in 16x10 w/4" backspacing, and swamper ltb's (31x11.5r16).
i ask about this because it would be so much cheaper if i could run 15's, but i want to make sure i get it right, and not drop a bunch of cash just to have the rims/tires not fit.

thanks a lot guys

Talking Be safe

From all that I have read and heard, you can go up in rim size, but not back down due to the caliper issue that you have discovered.

thanks
i read somewhere though that even if i use a 16" rim, my calipers still might not clear. something about the difference in strength and design of alloy and steel wheels. something like steel wheels need to be thicker or designed differently to create the strength needed, so my calipers still might not fit depending on the manufacturer and material.

If a 16" rubs it will be a negligable amount, nothing a little grinding to the caliper cant fix
