4runner updates - BajaRack, Line-X on the TMJ, etc

Over the last several months I've ditched my old Surco Basket/Yakima roof rack setup and gone with the more slim line BajaRack. I like the looks of the rack a lot, and its nice to fit into garages and parking decks again. After a fender bender my TJM was pretty banged up, especially after the body shop bent it back into place, so I had it coated with Line-X to restore a nice finish to it. I also got rid of the cable/roller fairlead setup and installed Rugged Ridge synthetic winch line and a polished Hawse fairlead. Just washed and waxed the 4runner today, so I figured I'd post some new pictures. I think I'm done for now, planning to add 315 KM2s down the road and maybe a rear bumper if I can find one for a decent price - I do a lot of towing though so I don't know if I want to drop the hitch since most aftermarket bumpers aren't rated for towing. On with the pics:

Nice...very, very nice. I keep telling people that you can't go wrong with getting things LineX'd...it is really a good product if you can afford it.
And, I really like your new BajaRack, little different profile than the Yakima, which I'm looking for one right now also. My only problem is that my roof is naked, I don't even have factory installed roof racks. Good looking 4Runner.

i was planning to ask a local welder to build me something if i draw it up to spec. i was considering the possibility of using my class 3 hitch as the core of the bumper. just build the bumper around it. sortof.

oh and hey that rig is badass. nice work.

How much did it cost to linex your TJM? i was thinking of doing the same since my TJM is starting to look a little faded

Kerby J - that's a nice looking bumper, good idea too incorporating the factory hitch... let me know if you ever come through Chapel Hill, I'd love to take a closer look at your design

As for the cost of the Line-X, the guy charged me for half a truck bed which came out to be $250. It ended up being a pretty good deal because he sprayed 8 coats on the outside which added at least 1/4" of thickness and gave everything a smooth finish again. He also sprayed the inside with a few coats to keep it from rusting. The finish turned out better than I expected, down the road I may Line-X all the gray trim - still my DD though so not quite ready to do all that.

Did you get the Xtra coating too? I did my TJM that way and it turned out phenomenal. It was $290. The TJM powdercoats is absolute garbage and it's worth the investment for an expensive (and now "rare") bumper.

I'm not sure what the Xtra coating is, so I'm assuming that I didn't get it. I am very happy with the way it turned out though, after 6 months it still looks just as good as the day I picked it up. I agree with you about the factory TJM finish too - mine was bubbling and rusting within a year, which really sucks when you drop that kind on money into a bumper. If I do end up with a rear bumper I am certainly going to get it Line-Xed as well. What do you guys know about the Perkin's Performance rear bumpers? I've seen them popping up on threads lately and the price is very fair, but I haven't heard any reviews of them yet.

It's a glossy Kevlar goo they can spray over top of the LineX. Basically keeps if from fading and makes it look semi-gloss all the time. I doubt you have the kind of intense sun like in AZ, which is why I went with it. They can spray it over anytime though if you can find a dealer that does it.

Rubbish pic but you can sort of see how deep glossy it is.

EXCELLENT!

you WILL need to post another pic or two, so we can see that beefy side protection you've got on the corners there. from the back it looks pretty tough.

i think with that brand, the "xtra" is the UV top coat. if you want it to stay black, and not get that chalky grey after time, you'll need it.

So after looking at rear bumpers for a few days I've decided to make this my new summer project. I'm selling my custom hitch that was modified to fit a 2" body lift so please let me know if you are interested: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f109.../#post51475213.
