4runner story
i hate my 2nd generation 4 runner. I got this 4runner about 4 months ago and all its been doing is giving me problems. When i first bought it i had to change a bunch of stuff on it and replace the timing belt. After i got all that stuff done (about 3 months after i bought it) my engine starting making a noise. Now i know i should of checked my oil but who cares...im past that now...i didnt check my oil and now i dont have an engine. i took it to my dads shop that he owns because i dont have alot of money and he doesnt charge me labor. So i took it there and i have waited for 2 weeks so far for them to get a darn engine. I was happy today because they said they found one with 100,000 miles on it for 1600. Well i took a look at it and it looked like crap! I talked to the mechanics there and they said there is no way that engine is going to work. SOOOO now i have to send that engine back and start looking for another one that i can afford. Im sick of not having my car and i cant seem to find a engine for it. So now im to the point that i want to take my 95 4runner and blow it up. I dont want a toyota after this...4runners suck! what would you do?

It seems to me that all of your grief is self imposed. If you would pull your head out long enough to take a look around, you would find that your bad judgement is the root of your problems. Most 4runners run long past 250k miles. They do not suck. Do us a favor and point your ignorance elsewhere.

let me get this straight:
you had the means to get work done on your car WITHOUT LABOR by professional mechanics and didnt take advantage of it till you stupidly killed the engine by not checking/changing/adding oil.
and.. its the truck's fault?
......ok.

definatly time to sell it.
I'll give ya $5 for it. Think of it as going to a better place. Like to the great 4runner home in the sky. At least (with me)it will be happier and live a long prosperous life. And since I dont own anything that new I will definately treat it right! And always check the oil every time I fill up with gas.

I go for some time without checking my oil, but shouldn't the oil light have come on when it was critically low? I'm assuming it has a light and not a gauge.

While that engine is out, i would go find a rolled taco (No pun intended) or a rolled 4runner and yank out a 3.4 liter. The swap is do-able. I believe it is a 3mpg increase and 90 horse, plus some extra reliability.
Damn now I want a rolled taco. mmmmm

That aside it's time to face facts. either you sell the dead rig or commit to a long and painful rebuild on a budget process. Start reading books and picking your dad's brain. ask smart questions and learn how to use a basic set of hand tools. I can just about guarantee that you will always be glad you learned/developed some mechanical ability. I also gurantee that if you help do a lot of the work you will take much better care of the newly repaired rig and derive tons more driving enjoyment from it as well.
Good Luck.

<------Rarely checks his oil anymore. Doesn't leak or burn!!
Don't loose confidence in your 4runner, it's a great truck! Treat it right, and it'll treat you just as well! Also, I'd NEVER pay $1600 for an engine with 100k. Those are 100k undocumented miles.

ive gone almost 15K in my truck with 2 check engine lights that were both fixed under warranty; both CEL's were normal for my truck's mileage and have been the only problem so far. i change my oil around every 3500 miles.

your right, it is undocumented miles but if you were in my position...had about $1700 for a engine...what would you do?

No kidding Gapguy,
Seems pretty pricey for those miles. Come up to the rust belt one local yard has four 3.Slows @ $300.00 each delivered locally. their only guarrenty is that " it will run or we will replace it " 30 days. As for mileage " if you can figure out which one it came out of" you might be able to tell how many miles.
Then again "run" is a pretty vague description.

Seaflea if you get it I'll give you $10 for it...100% profit margin...
Joking 95toy4runner Modzilla has the right ideas. Use the opportunity to learn. Also, I paid close to 3k for my remunufactured motor, if you can find a used one with under say 80k for half that, and you know it was well maintained (one good indicator is to drop the drain bolt and look at the oil...if it's clean, someone at least changed it fairly recently), go for it...make sure to change all your fluids regularly from now on.
Also Gapguy has a point...make your best deal on anything used.

I did that on my old car and ended up paying 1800 dollars for engine and sold it over $2000 of what it's worth so all was well. Car/truck is never going to be the same after you get a new/rebuilt engine. I'd say it's time for another truck/car

I'd would look for a a rebuilt block you can get them for around $1200 on ebay.
I can get a running 91 3VZE that has a boggered spark plug hole for $200.
Anyways you can technically use any 3VZE 88-95 blocks they just have different timing belt tensioners. Good luck in your quest.
