4Runner - rattle/clunky noise coming from rear
#21
Ditto the upper RR dust cover on OEM shocks. ((1998 4runner 4wd)) The weld has broken where the stud goes thru it and you can rotate it by hand. It's more or less noisy depending on how it may have rotated or shifted from time to time.
This noise developed very suddenly on a 15k road trip from Alaska thru the lower 48 and back and it drove me nuts for 2 years afterwards. 3 dealers looked for it while doing oil changes and never found it, altho one of them said I had an out of round RR brake drum that was making the noise on light braking... Not!
The dealer who finally found it on the last oil change on a different road trip last year wasn't even looking for it as I got tired of mentioning it and it never got any worse (turn the stereo up). The tech noticed it while doing a once over on things and rotating the tires.... go figger. It's still broke, still noisy, and the shock works fine at 165k (or as fine as OEM ever worked...)

Old thread, but my two cents...
I quieted a similar rattle. It was coming from the rear seat latch that holds the seat up. The one next to the rear head rest. The latch didn't hold as tight as it used to. I wrapped some electrical tape around the fixed metal part to stop the rattle. Hope that makes sense. I don't feel like I explained it well.

Vibration
Hey Guys,
This is my first post here but i saw it was a fitting topic.
I have 2002 Sport 4runner, running completely stock which is making a scuffing/ pinging vibration when it hits 4000 RPM's. It doesnt happen all the time but its only when the needle hits 4000. Below or over that number everything is okay.
I am 99% sure its not the engine; i havent seen a loss of power and generally the noise sounds like it comes from behind me.
Any help would be appreciated. I plan on trying to get under her sat. and take a peak.
P.S - I forgot to mention she only has 57,000 miles on her.

Just bought my 4Runner a week ago - drover her home ~ 120 miles from point of purchase. Has M+S tires on it, bounces like a beast. 265/75R16 tires, generic brand from what I can tell. Also had a rattle in the rear, underneath. I drove it for a total of 220 miles or so.
I take a look - and the rear shock on the right side is totally separated/broken from the top mounting location. The upper portion of it had been beaten up pretty bad, and was rattling pretty bad as a consequence.....
My shopping list just got re-prioritized.....
I was thinking it was a heat shield, exhaust, spare, (something else) - wasn't expecting that....
