that is freakin' awesome; they should keep it as is with the chunk of tree and travel the country showing it off; maybe get sponsored by Toyota!

Awesome. Gotta love the bullet-proof toyota (or tree proof). One problem with the article - there aren't hickorys in the cascades. Looks like Hemlock to me. They're notorious for comming down in big wind storms.

What does Toyota being amazing even have to do with this situation?

The tree hit the roof in the cargo area. It doesn't matter if its a Nissan, Toyota, or a Ford, its going to drive out under its own power. The tree did not hit anything relating to the drivetrain. Hell, you could cut the roof off flush with the floor and it would still drive.

Yeah, and that's what all the flamers in the autoblog comments section said, but I don't quite buy it. Look at that tree. It is very large, and very heavy. I am willing to bet that when it fell, it loaded the cargo area well beyond it's weight limit (and I don't just mean the roof. That was obviously beyond its limit). On a more poorly built vehicle, he could easily have a bent axle, messed up hub, broken suspension, etc. and it wouldn't have just driven away, or maybe without some scraping and long noises that obviously are a sign of imminent death. The awesome toyota-ness here is that the tree fell on it, and it could probably still have a full life if someone fixed the body.

I agree with you that it isn't technically as impressive as it looks, but I think there is still credit here to be given to Toyota quality. But hey, we don't need to be jeep guys about it and worship them for no reason.

BTW, the owner is a regular over on T4R.org. Check out the first hand story here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...l-4runner.html

Ah, he mentioned a friend was trying to buy it from him. You are screwing the T4R.org guys out of a nice part out

Have you seen it in person? I am curious if there is any other damage than just the body damage, or if it's really as good as it looks in the videos.

EDIT: Oh, I see you posted there too... I didn't even put together that DeathCougar there was DeathCougar here...

Certainly not screwing them out of a part out, I am trying to buy it to part it!

I have seen some pictures, the body is a little rough but not too terrible

Not sure if it's kosher to link to a different t4r forum, but here is a link to a forum where he posted the story in all it's detail.

Cherokee is a unibody so ofcourse it would have been much worse whole different can of worms .... but I agree that most vehicles could take a hit in that area and still be able to "drive away from it" its really not all that impressive
