4 Cyl engine available in 2001 4runner?
Hi, my daughter has an appointment to go look at a 2001 Silver 4runner with cloth seats (SR5?).
She is far away. I can't go with her.
It's being sold by original owner - 190K, good tires, straight body, everything works. Just passed smog.
The advertisement says it's a 4cyl engine.
I've been out of the 4runner world for a while, but I thought the 2001 only came with V6?
Anyone?
Thanks!

I don't know my 4Runner gens...If it's the 3.4L, it's the best engine Toyota had ever built up to that point. And especially in a 4Runner, you want the V6 power. If it's the 3.0 V6, then yeah, you're probably better off with the 4 cylinder.
I was a die-hard 4 cylinder guy all my driving life. When I needed a "new" truck I tried really hard to find a 4 cylinder Tacoma. But at the same time my friend was selling his 98 with the 3.4L V6. I tried really hard to find something else; regular cab, power nothing, 4 cylinder. Eventually it was clear that I wasn't going to find a better truck than my friend's, so I bought it. I'm honestly still in awe of this engine. Plenty of power (by Toyota standards), and after 270,000 miles, nothing but routine maintenance. Not even a valve adjustment.

a 3rd gen with the 3RZ 2.7 would be a good truck...

You're right, 2000 was the last year for both the 4-Cyl and the 5-speed transmission.

2001 Toyota 4Runner
Sport Edition 2001 4Runner History:
This was rumored to be the last year the 4Runner was to be manufactured in Japan, but it was not true.
The following changes are made for 2001 model year.
1. Model Line-Up
Base models are no longer offered, therefore no more 4cylinder engines. The optional electric rear differential lock has been discontinued. The 3RZ-FE engine models and the 5VZ-FE engine models with a manual transmission have been discontinued. The 4Runner is now available only with the 5VZ-FE engine with an automatic transmission in the 2WD or 4WD models. The following models have been added. VZN180L-GKPSKA, VZN185L-GKPSKA
