Well I think I'm going to go with the 5.29's. I drove to work the other day in 4th gear and revving around 2600 rpm which is where I'll be with 5.29's and the 32'' tall studded tires and it wasn't too bad at all. The speed limit on my route to work is only 50mph so I think the rev's will be okay.

 

My limited experience with gear ratios has been as follows......ARGHHHH!!!! In a perfect universe we would all have all three set ups ready to switch out on a moments notice, just unlatch and replace. LoL I dream too much.

 

Funny! People have no problem doubling up Transfer cases, but maybe someone should figure out how to double up transmissions!

 

I run 35's and 5.29's. I would not worry about the rpms. Every thing still sits in the torque range, which is what you should be worried about most.

 

i agree with MYTOYOTA thats one of many awesom things about yota rear ends its so easy to swap out carriers find a used rear and buy both ratios

 

35s and 5 speed? 5.29s would be best.

33s and 5 speed and no towing? 4.88s

5.29 for any auto (higher OD than 5th gear)

 

5.29's on 35's for 3 and half years now. I find only one negative with 5.29's is high rpm on highway in the fifth gear. Other than that, it gives extra power everywhere and help alot in 4x4 low range. I wouldn't trade 5.29's for 4.88's anytime soon.

 

Well I'm still on the fence but with a little lean towards the 4.88's again. I like the idea of being as close to stock with the revs and 35's plus it means that the speedo and odometer will all be close too. Then the revs won't be as high when I put on the 32's for winter. Gonna have to decide soon though.

 

Part of the problem is that you are running drastically different sizes of tires.

Well 5.29 would be great with 35's. It's do-able with the 32" tires, but might rev a bit. I would do 5.29. If you get tired of the rev's on the 32" winter tires, buy a bigger set, then your good year round. I've got a set of winter 35" on my tundra, they are Goodyear Duratracs that are siped and studded I love them. Way better than others I've had. I live in the mountains and have snow 6 months of the year so the winter tires is a concern for me too.

 

Wow I'm surprised! I didn't know they came that size. When I got mine (3-4 years ago) I was lead to believe the 32's were as big as I could get but that's great news. That really helps to make up my mind. That and I also watched a clip of a guy crawling up a pretty steep trail here in BC, and I do mean crawling! It was in a jeep though but the fact remains that lower is definitely better!!!

Actually, I got a quote from you guys recently and your prices are good but I also got a quote from a place here in BC that was very close to yours but the clincher was that I don't pay any duty if I go through them here. Thanks for the headsup. I still recommend you get Nitro gears. They are cut like OE and much better quality than others out there. Also the rear's are now available in the Heavy duty 01+ 29 spline pinion design. You can source them from a few places in BC:

Well after MUCH deliberation, I ended up ordering the 4.88 gear ratio. With the 32's and 5.29 gears, the revs will be much too high for my taste, and how I use my rig. Thanks for everyone's input though!

 

Your asking to much. No gear ratio can properly accommodate two different tire sizes. Get some 35'' snow tires and gear accordingly. I run 4.56 with 33'' toyo's....Perfect. Speedo is dead on which tells me It's pretty much factory ratio as intended. But if I ever got snow tires or a tampoon, id get 33'' snow tires.

 

Yeah I know it's asking to much, but I'm not going to spend over $1500 on another set of studs just so I can run 5.29's either. 4.88's are the best compromise.

 

Ya tires are rediculouslly expensive. 4.88 is a good gear for those tires.
Especially for highway speeds with 32's. Dont think you will be doin 70mph in snow or ice anyways.

 

Dont mind if i steal ur thread for some input on runnin 31inch duratracs with 4.88s i wheel and highway drive and the 4.10s are guttless in the hills would that be a good combo and would i see any mpg loss THX

 

You should be good with 4.10s as it isn't worth the $$$ to regear for 31s IMO.
