Front and rear master install kits if you have a lot of miles on your truck. If less than say 80k get minor install kits.

I had 4.56's in my 5spd 3.4 taco running 255/85's and it ran perfectly. With an auto i've always heard 4.88's is money though.

I'm glad I got 4.88s. Get a locker too, at least in the rear. It would be the best time cuz you'll save $$ if you do it w/ the gears. My locker is the difference between shoveling snow at 6am before work or just driving out.

4.56's would make more sense for the tires your gonna run. 4.88's will send your mpg right down the toilet

I get about 18 mpg w/ my 4.88s too. You know what's worse than losing an mpg or 2? Spending spending like $1200 on 4.56s and wishing afterwards that you would have just got 4.88s cuz you still don't have the power you want. 4.56's for 32s, 4.88s for 33s and 34s. Seriously.

I generally agree with that statement for an auto. But for a 5spd 4.56's are perfect for 33's because of the lower overdrive ratio.

If I was dead set on 34's or 35's with a 5 speed I would go 4.88's. Especially if there were some heavy Super Swampers on big heavy or steel rims.

But I really like my 4.56's and am happy with 32's and 33's on Toyota 16's.

I never plan on going bigger than a 33" tire.

Can someone tell me what the stock cruising RPM's at 75MPH in a 3.4 auto? I heard recently that if you were to go with 255/85/16(33.4") tire that 5.29's will make it as close to stock as possible...

See the thread below on 5.29s and 33s. 5.29s are the way to go for the A/T and 33s because of the super tall 0.70 O/D ratio.

It will make it as close to stock as possible as far as acceleration and overall feel goes - not RPMs. My 4.88s "feel" like stock, but my RPMs are about 6-700 higher at freeway speeds than stock. 5.29's will be higher still.

I used to do about 2400 RPM in OD at 75 MPH w/265s and 4.11s, now I'm doing about 3000 RPM in OD at 75 MPH w/305s (32.8") and 4.88s. Your RPMs will get higher the lower the gear ratio, and your top speed will diminish due to the fact that the RPMs wind out to redline earlier. I would say 5.29s would put you pretty close to my numbers since you will be running a .6" larger tire.

Seriously 4.88's and not being on 35's--doesnt make good logical sense.
I would like to respectfully disagree.

Talk to all those import guys running 300K on their tiny Honda motors. RPMs don't kill anything unless you are right next to redline all day long.

Factory 4.88's

I have factory 4.88's in my Yota and I am currently running 33's. My truck is a daily driver and I even use it to pull a 5'x13' trailer and a 24' pop up camper. I don't have any issues with using it as a daily driver with this set up. I would prefer to have a stick, but the auto is doing it's job for now.

This is a cut and paste to my perspective on the issue.

Sure.

The A340 trannies have a 70% overdrive. Its one of the tallest overdrives of any A/T on the market. When you compare it to the 5spd available in the same models, they have a 85% overdrive.

I'll put it in terms of miles per hour vs rpms.

My new 4runner runs 265/75/16s right now. It has 4.30s from the factory in it. At 80mph I am running at 2600rpms in OD. However, the same 4runner with a 5spd with only 4.10s is running 3100 rpms.

Obviously, the holding power of the 5spd is MUCH better than that of the A/T. It won't require needing a lower gear nearly as much at hwy speeds.

So, in order for me to get the same kind of holding power at hwy speeds, I would need to install 5.29s to get a similar rpm as the 5spd has.

Plain and simple is that Toyota/Aisin never changed the gearing on the A340 from 1984-2004. It hunts for 3rd way too often on slight inclines which results in poorer fuel economy, less power, and a difference of 1100 rpms when it up shifts from OD to 3rd.

When you drive your A/T around on the freeway, how often do you notice the torque convertor lock and unlock? You will feel it when it unlocks and notice a 250rpm increase when it does it. Normally, after a few seconds of this the tranny will then shift into 3rd. That unlock and constant searching for a better gear creates heat in the tranny.

In my situation with this 4runner, I plan to tow my pop-up camper a lot with it. I am going to install 5.29s with the 33s to get similar power to what a 5spd has to offer. It will also allow me to run easier at hwy speeds while towing and even without towing.

5spds get better mileage running higher rpms than the auto do as well.
