Howdy team. I am having little luck with SEARCH so here's the question.

How close is 4.30 & 265/75 16 to 4.10 & 265/70 16. I am looking to swap my unlocked rear to a factory locker and I'd like to add 1" taller tires without losing my current performance. This is my daily driven rig and I am happy with the current MPG. I don't want to mess that up at all.

Tire Jump:
30.5 to 32 is a 4.92% increase

Gear change:
4.10 to 4.30 is a 4.88% increase

close enough?

 

This is exactly the swap that I recently did, well I was always at 265/75/16's, but my rig was always sluggish. The pep came back with the 4.30's. I know that doesn't totally answer your question, but at least you know I am very happy with my 4.30's.

Can anyone tell me the Toyota part number(s) for the stuff I need to convert my 2000 4Runner 5spd to a 4.30 w/locker?
My official Toyota "tech" guy has "informed" me that the 4.10 is the lowest the factory ever went in the 4Runner.
If I could supply the part numbers perhaps he would change his mind.

It will be easier if you get the whole axle as the housings are different. Try some salvage yards or something.

I will be doing the same soon. Am getting the axles off a 99 limited with 4.30 and eLocker.

 

Ditto on that, your best bet is to just swap the entire axle with the diff lock in it and yes, the lockers had 4.30's in there. Also if you have 4WD you are going to have to swap both the front and the rear because you can't have mismatched gear ratios without tearing the 4WD to pieces.

 

I know this has been discussed, but make sure you get the gear ratio you want. Because not all factory E-lockers are a 4.30 ratio.

I have a '97 with 4.10's, with E-locker, V6, 5 speed, and 265/70 16's were the tires the 'Runner had when new.

I run LT 265/75 16's. I didn't notice any appreciable difference in perceived power, going down the road with the larger, heavier tires.

3rd gens dont come with 3.56's and Im pretty sure ALL the 3rd gen E-lockers are 4.30 as well...

We went through that whole arguement in one thread.....there were a handfull of people claiming that they had factory lockers with 4.10's and it is certainly was possible (may have been the dealer that did that on arrival, who knows). In any case most with a locker did come with 4.30's (that was how they were listing options from the factory) and if you are installing a locker in the rear, it would pay to also check and make sure you match up front too. Another option would be to regear the locker before install to match the front (if needed).

I know for sure the lowest offered on a 3rd gen in 1996 was 3.73 so there were no 3.56's that ever came from the factory that way (maybe a dealer install?). Are you sure you don't mean 4.56's?

I've never heard of a 3.56 axle ratio in a 3rd gen. 4Runner either..

But 4.10's W/e-locker were indeed a factory option.

 

I have a 2002 V6 4wd auto 4runner which came with P225/75 R15 wheels. I have an axle code of A02A which according to this site means I have 3.56 gears. I tried do the "lift one wheel off the ground and turn the wheel" trick but I would swear the driveshaft turns twice for one rotation of the tire. Weird.

 

Well I am searching, again, for the rear (and front) 4.30's diffs and housing w/e-locker for my 16" '00 4Runner with ABS. I am sending to notes to salvage yards today. We'll soon see who wants to work with me.......I hope.

I don't think that site is totally correct....here is what I have for the axle codes:

First Digit:
Diameter of Ring Gear
A=7.5
B=8.0

Second and Third Digits:
Gear Ratio
01=3.583
02=3.727
03=4.100
04=4.556 or 4.300
05=4.700
06=4.875 or 3.909

Fourth Digit:
Number of Pinions
A=2
B=4
C-2 Pinion OEM limited slip

These are Truck Axle Codes for 94-2004
(A00A) Letter, Number, Number, Letter

....so A02A would be a 7.5" gear, 3.73 ratio, with 2 pinions but I am not entirely sure this one is correct either.

I found a few threads going back a ways that do indicate 4.10s do come with lockers optional (good read):

I think 4.30 gears only came with a locker, but a locker was an option with 4.10s.

Now I am confused. I guess the only way to tell is crack it open.
