3rz engine interchange

If i were looking for an engine to replace the 2.7 3rz engine in my 98, what years could i look for? My 4runner has CA emissions, and is an automatic. I'm looking for the head and block. I can reuse the intake, wiring, etc. so i would just need the hard parts.

My engine is leaking internally. coolant seeps into the #1 cylinder and it sputters and runs like crap for 30 seconds or so on cold start up. Its got 205k on it, and i've never had it apart. I'm thinking of pulling the engine and performing a tear down on it while its out. The oil pan and/or rear main seal are leaking as well.

Any thoughts?

I believe 99 is when the 3rz switched to distibutorless ignition. If thats the case then any 3rz from a 95.5-98 would work assuming your going to swap intake/exhuast over like you said.

There we go. Will the distributors swap on the 98-00 or is the timing gear different?

I have a buddy with a 97 3RZ with coil packs.
I don't know what month they started, but some 97's came with coils.

Take the head off and inspect the HG if that is the only thing that needs repair.

Might want to get new OEM bolts while you're at it.

Reseal your oil pan and get on with your life. If you want to prove your skills of swapping engines, go ahead but it isn't going to help you with anything.

Cheers!
