3rd Gen window track issue?

I have a 1998 T4R. Recently, the power window on the drivers door started slowing, and reached the point where it needed help, and up-and-down bursts, to get it closed fully. I figured the regulator was worn out or linkage bent, as the tailend of the window seemed to rise while the front dragged slightly lower.

Bottom-line; I bought a new regulator and motor, and installed them tonight. What I noticed when I removed the old one, and the glass, is that the rubber that lined the front window channel seemed closed together, which I thought COULD cause binding. It's original rubber on there, too, although it LOOKS in good shape. I removed the front track to see if it was bent or deformed, and it was fine. HOWEVER, when I re-installed the rubber, it still seemed to be squeezed together, with only about 1/16" between the lips that ride the glass. Also, as the glass comes up, it pushes the top of the rubber overlap on the windshield pillar away from the pillar, and further interferes with the window closing.

Anyway, with the new regulator/window motor installed, I put it all back together and STILL have the same issue as before (won't close normally/needs help/needs short up-and-down bursts).

What is the rubber called, and has anyone had a similar issue? We had some sub-zero weather and it started about the same time.

thanks
