3rd Gen Timing Belt Replacement
I'm just curious...has anyone ever NOT replaced their timing belt at 90K miles, only to have it break on them shortly thereafter? Has anyone ever had a timing belt break on them?
In general, can Toyota dealership's maintenance/repair departments be trusted with this and other types of maintenance?
My 2001 is at 88K. I am going to replace the belt soon. Is there anything else I should do along with the belt replacement?

Hey bamachem,
How difficult do you think changing the timing belt, water pump, etc is in comparison to the tundra/ome lift or replacing steering bushings.
I'm debating on whether to attempt replacing the timing belt myself, but would have to do A LOT of reading and research since I have no exp whatsoever.
I've also read that some kind of special tool is needed for the pulleys that costs $50, which might not make it worth it if I only use it once...

i have 112xxx on my original belt... im assuming. there were no records with the car from carmax so im on the assumption its not been replaced. i had toyota check it out and the tech said it was in good shape. 90k is more of a safety bench mark but id rather get it done sooner than later. the 3.4 isnt an interference engine but id still rather not be stranded...

my belt was last changed at 76k, the p.o. took extremely good care of her so i'm assuming all belts and pump were replaced as well. welll...i just hit 186k and, as i posted on another thread, i get a horrible burning smell outside on cold days, almost positive it has to do with the belts. my dilemma is i'm taking my girlfriend to boone the 3rd week in february for our 1 year anniversary and want more than anything to make the 750 mile there-and-back journey without any problems, so i figure this is the first place to look for assurance.
anyways, i'm about out of cash but have a few sources of cash (read: mom) that i can squeeze if i can do this right. could anyone give me the prices of the parts i would need and estimate of labor for a local shop? i would really prefer all the work be done at the dealership but with my predicament its just not possible. thanks guys

just got back from Tony Divino (utah) and it cost me $525 for belt and water pump, both were original with 190K on them. water pum was still fine but was "starting to crust and had about 5k miles more if that" so my wallet is a little lighter and now my lift is out of the question till next year...

I am about to undertake this job on my 176k(2nd belt 1st waterpump) and where do you guys suggest finding toyota parts other than the dealership. Any online places that are reasonable? Along with the waterpump and belt I will probably change out the pullies because you can hear them chirping away.

Mine went 136k before my front main seal started to leak oil. Thats what forced me to do my timing belt, WP, thermostat, hoses, serp belts etc. I even replaced my radiator because i broke off one of the trans cooler fittings.
