3rd Gen --STALLING-- When Warm?

96 4runner with 70k miles, auto trans....

When the engine is warm and I turn it off for a little and try to restart it, it will start for about 1-3 seconds and then stall out ??

Usually happens after a pretty long drive. Either I'll stop at a store and get something really quick and try to start it back up, it does this.

Its kind of making me worry. The spark plugs (NGK) are only 3 months old, battery (Toyota) is about a 1.75 years old. I have done seafoam in the past. I have used injector cleaner once a month since I've had it.

It takes about 3 trys and then I have to really press down the gas to keep it idling....

Help!

Check your MAF. My Taco did something similar, and the MAF and TB were caked with black crap... Used some Electronics cleaner on the MAF, and some Carb cleaner on the TB, and it's been working like a champ since.

MAF, TPS, IAC, dirty fuel or air filters can all cause those symptoms. I would also clean the throttle body just to ensure it is not that preventing a decent idle. Is the problem only at idle?

Thanks guys! You know what? I haven't cleaned my K&N for like a year...EEK. DIdnt even think about that.

I've cleaned my TB out a few times, but, not recently. I'll try cleaning the TB, K&N and MAF and get back to you guys.

Yes, its only right at idle when I start it. I turn the key...the engine turns over once and dies.

I've been in Texas for the last week so I have to get home and do it. I'll try posting results tomorrow.

Any results? I'm having same problem with my 99 4R. I've cleaned MAF, air filter, TB already. I'm thinking it's fuel related problem.

Bump...

Its back, and I have already cleaned the MAF, TB and air filter. (Within the past week).

Its only when I do a drive to warm up the engine, turn it off for less than 5-10 minutes and turn it back on. It will stall out, and only way to keep it from stalling is to rev the engine for about 10-15 seconds. Then after that, it almost stalls out..the idle very low.

This only happens on warm days, when the engine is warm... Any ideas?!

It went away the first time, now its back, and I want to fix it!!

You probably need to clean the IAC.

Cleaning the MAF is easy even in cold weather, the IAC cleaning is a bit more involved.
