3rd gen reliability?

I have 255,000 miles on my 2001 4runner it's still running great.
The only things I've had to replace that broke or failed were the drivers side power door lock motor, power antenna, and steering rack assembly.
I've done 2 timing belts/water pump changes but that's just preventive maintenance. I also replaced all the ball joints an tie rod ends on at 220K miles. The tie rods were still good but the ball joints where iffy.
I run Delo 15W-40 oil which works great in the hot summer Houston traffic. I see 15-20 psi idle and 50 psi at 70mph on the highway. Pretty good oil pressure for an engine with a quarter million miles on it
.
A 3rd gen 4runner will last a looooong time if you take good care of it and never over heat it. One good overheat on a 5VZ-FE will end up costing a head gasket and warped head.

I think mechanically the 3G's are good for 300,000 plus if maintained. I have owned and maintained enough cars to believe that the limiting factor on modern cars is more the effects of time on the sophisticated electronics. I had to junk a 1985 BMW 735i (280,000mi.) and a 1993 Saab 900 (254,000 mi.) both around the seventeen-year mark because the computer modules were going. A new ABS module or an SRS module can cost a grand and an ECM is more. And hitting the junkyards for transplants is a pain--plus you have no assurance of longevity. As a member of forums similar to ours for those cars I could see the same thing was happening to other folks.
When these things go, it usually means a disqualifying dash light so you fail inspection and you have a hard time selling it that way. So I expect my '99 is good to around 2016, after that I am not sure. I am not putting a grand of new electronics into a seventeen-year old car. I hope the Toyota stuff has better longevity than the (largely Bosch) Euro stuff.
Finally, there is no level of OCD maintenance that will increase the life of an ECM. When it goes, it goes.

I have heard of a couple older yotas with the 22r that have close to 750K on them. Its a machine that needs to be cared for, and parts will wear down. Some faster than others, but I think if you want it to last, you will find a way to keep it running.
