Did some more searching, these may be good...

they are in the Bay area...

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/pts/222657385.html

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pts/222043828.html

The first one might be perfect, parts are from a front end fire totalled car.

Good luck with everything.

i would at the very least go get the truck appraised by an insurance adjuster to see if its even worth it to fix it yourself...who knows maybe they will total it and you could get a check to start all over again. or at least you know what you gotta do then..also the insurance dude should give you a list of everything that needs to be replaced..if they total it you can always buy it back and sometimes you get a salvaged title but thats no big deal if you dont plan on selling it.

Its gonna be alot more work than you think.

Hey man I think I would convince your parents to let you turn it into insurance. Tell them you will pay the difference for how much it goes up because that is a nice truck and it is going to be a nightmere to put back together. Like another guy said the wiring is going to be so hard, not to mention the smell, do you still drive it? Does it smell pretty bad of smoke?

One morning we were just driving along...

...on the way from Houston to Galveston (TX), when we noticed smoke behind us. Turns out a cig flicked out hthe window wound up firing up a blanket in the bed. We were lucky and got to it before it did much damage. I think that was mid to late 80's...point is, everyone has made careless mistakes-live and learn

Dude,

Start a list here with what you need.

You will be suprised how many folks have spares/scratched/dented but serviceable parts that will be either free or cheap.

Dude, there is a reason you have insurance, this is it. They will total the truck, you can take whatever is left of your lift, stereo, etc, out, then you buy a new one with the money, or pay off the loan and start over. Spending your college fund on it is stupid. Ignore your dad, call the insurance.
FYI, coals retain heat for a LONG time. If you want to be able to shut off a grill and put it in the truck, get a propane grill.

yeah... if at all possible claim insurance, college is FUN and if i had to choose between my truck or my education, i pick my education everytime!

just remember it takes awhile for anyone to find a truck at the bottom of a lake/bay!

That's a tough lesson to learn -- sorry it happened and glad nobody got hurt. I hate to be so blunt, but your parents are making a MORONIC choice. You will never be able to repair it to a point that you'll be able to resell it as a "clean" vehicle, so you're going to take the "salvage" hit regardless of whether it say so on the title or not. If you have full coverage, report it as a claim and get it fixed properly or take the pay-off for totaling it out.

And then start over.

It's not even worth considering paying for repairs on a depreciating asset which is considerably devalued because of a fire. To take repair funds out of a college funds to fix it would be beyond idiotic.

Hope you make a good decision on this one.

Ed

Wow. That's not the best thing ever and what everyone said about the college fund.....

.....and you might need to get that user name tweaked a wee bit.

(good luck for quick/cheap repair)

I wouldn't waste another minute even looking for replacement parts. If what you did was just cosmetic than it would be one thing, but judging by the melted tail light and other brake-light/domelight wires visible in the picture it's going to be way over your head.

The advice your parents are giving you is so bad it makes me wonder if there is more to the story. The wiring alone is a MAJOR project and I can't imagine the insurance company not totalling the truck after seeing that. No parent would ever put their child's education on hold for making a dumb decision...and it was a RELLY dumb decision, but ya know what, evryone has done some real dumb stuff in their lives. it's not like you killed someone. If they still don't budge I'd drive the thing off a cliff and that would leave them no choice. Now go do your homework, because if your dad doesn't come to his senses, you are going to need a scholarship.

Yea, thanks guys, I appreciate all the help, I talked to my dad about it again. He said our other option is to strip it of everything I care about (PIAA's, audio etc.) and just buy another truck. He said he understands about college and says that I can wait to pay him back! (i showed him this thread, thanks guys!) So, moving along, anyone have a 1985 P/U available?

Good news! We took the truck down to the local mechanic. He replaced all the fuses. Everything works in the truck except the turn signals. So, legally, to get the truck up and running, all I need is a driver side window, a rear tail light, and whatever harnesses and wires I need for the turn signals.

Your Dad's reluctance to make the claim may be based on what it would do to your yearly insurance costs, depending on the state you are in.

You should ask if that is the concern. Insurance is very high these days, for a teenager in the home. An extra $200 a month for his total bill would be a burden for most.... It could be years before that could be brought back down to where it is now. I can understand that, even if you are currently paying for your part of the total bill.

Just guessing... but it might explain his viewpoint.
