Did you blow out your muffler??
When my 1978 Ford F-250 back fired it blew the muffler apart (literaly, it blew out the welds and there was nothing left). It sounded like a diesel after that! I didn't hear it backfire but that is what the muffler shop told me.

Just curious - does a "backfire" occur when unburnt fuel (from the cylinder) makes it into the exhaust piping, and then ignites/explodes somewhere within the exhaust system? I may be way off base, and if I am, would someone mind helping me out with this little question. Thanks-
