Question 3rd gen center console fit question

This is a question for those who have ever taken off their center console (i.e. around A/C & stereo). Do you have some play or is it a solid tight fit? Does the area around the rear window control and heating/a/c vents feel solid or does it have some play and flex?

I pulled mine out tonight to install my pro fit cell phone holder and the console is tight and solid on that right side, but it feels as though it is not properly supported on the left and the top despite hearing it snap into place. I'm not sure if I broke one of the clips or not and I don't remember if it was loose like that before.

Thanks for any feedback

I took replaced my CD player w/ a nice aftermarket one and when I re-installed the dash and console it seemed to be not as tight a fit as I remembered. I don't know if I flubed somthing up too of if it was always that way, but I do beleive that it was tighter b4 I went messing w/ things. I dunno if that really helps but that's just what I experianced.

Hermes,

Ah ha...been there, done that. The 98 that I bought about 2 months ago had this same problem. There was a little gap on the left top corner of the center console panel. I knew this was not normal. Also, I needed to install my Pro-fit too (what a coincidence) as well as running the antenna wire from my Taco whip antenna to the stereo.

I'm assuming you know how to remove the center console so I'll just tell you some things that made my center console fit nice and tight when re-assembling:

- There are three screws that fasten the center console to the HVAC. I might be wrong about the top right one (its been a few weeks) but since I didn't fasten the left one, the left side left a gap.

- There are two tabs at the top. ***Gently*** pull them towards you a little. This should give the insert tabs on the CC a little more to grab/bite:

- If there is a little gap, give the top of the center console a nice little whack w/ the palm of your hand. Then make sure you screw those screws (above) all nice and tight.

Oh, when re-attaching the center console, start from the top and work your way to the bottom.

And sorry for the broke-ass pics. I was taking these one-handed.

Hope that helps!

Bob

I've pulled my dash and console so many times...it may just need a whack, with finese and sharpness. If it's done right, you hear a satisfying snap...if done wrong, you hear a sick crack...well, I've never heard mine crack yet. Good luck. Good pics Bob...worth a thousand words.

Yes I heard it snap and it appears to be fastened correctly. I have no gaps and it looks fine.

My question is should it feel solid or should it flex? There is no flex on the right (possible because the profit limits any movement due to the metal in between the console and dash), but the left side and up near the top has some flex. There is not a lot of movement, but enough that I wanted check with others.

Thanks again

Hermes,

My 99 flexed a little after lots of removal. I replaced the clips but found later, it can seem all the way back, but not be quite right.

Make sure the heater vents are perfectly lined up and it should back with a real 'snap' !
