3rd gen auto for manual swap?

has anyone here completed this? i can get a manual + T-case for less than $500, and would love to have a 5 speed (or is anyone interested in a trade???).

does anyone know whether the drive shafts are the same length? what is needed in addition to the tranny and t-case (i.e. clutch, brackets, etc.)? i've pulled the tranny out of the 3.4 before, so i think i could manage a swap if there aren't too many intricacies or fabrication involved . . . . any help or insight would be appreciated!

i believe the whole computer controls the auto tranny, so youd need a new computer unit

thats what i think anyway.. as my truck says right on the computer "3vz3 4x2 automatic"

He's the only one I know who has done the swap on a 3rd gen. 4Runner. Do you have a multimode 4wd transfer case? If could you take some pics of it if you do?

Don't forget to buy the pedals, slave cylinder and tank, ECU out of a 5-speed and new interior trim pieces.

thanks for the info, guys!

i was wondering about the ECU - i was hoping that going from an auto to manual didn't necessitate an ECU swap, because the ECU would still be able to figure out the fuel and timing at a particular gear based on the engine signals, but didn't need to have any input into shifting. now the other way around, maunal to auto, i would think you needed an ECU to have control over shifting. i'll email the guru above and see what they think.

cyclinder, pedal, trim . . . got it - that's what i was looking for!

thanks,

creed

Back when I had a 93 Camry V6, I was thinking of doing an auto to manual swap. There are a few guys on toyota nation that have done this. The car runs fine without changing the ECU, but they always have a check engine light on.

i have the stickshift-style (manual) transfer case that's standard on the SR5, with 4hi and 4lo - is this what you mean?

Not to shoot down your idea, but this would not be worth it. You would be much better off selling your auto and finding a manual.

The time and money would never be worth it going into this project.

Bump an old, old thread to see if anyone else has carried this out, specifically on a 01 or 02' 4Runner as, they didn't come with a manual. The only way I could justify doing it is buying a whole donor vehicle.
Anyone do this, think about it?

just get everything you need trans/tcase, clutch, master cylinder, pedal assembly.

all you have to do is wire it up so your ecu always thinks your truck is in neutral.
