Whats the mechanical difference between the model year rear bumpers?

I have an '02 and I'm told only an '01 or '02 will work.

What gives?

True direct interchange on the bumper will depend on what options the truck has.

However, the bumper mount brackets will interchange 96-02 and so will the fitment of the bumper.

The reason various parts houses say they wont is the options for paint, chrome, and flares changed through the years.

OK I have a plain Jane SR5, no flares only plastic mud flaps. So in that case will any year fit as long it's an SR5?

Anything from 96-02 SHOULD fit. But, just to be double 100% sure, try and find one from a 99-02 4Runner. My computer shows that as the exact correct interchange.
