33's...what gear ratio to go to?
O.k...I'm alittle confused....my runner is basically a daily driver with the occasional offroad it sees...I'm running 33's under it and I just found out that my 88 came stock with 4:10's...but I want to regear to regain some lost ponies....but what to regear to? 4:56's or 4:88's? Pros and cons anyone?

Cebby,
How are you planning on getting the 33's to fit? Do your 32's rub at all right now?

I have 33's and a SAW/OME lift combo for around 2.5" average lift. mine will only slightly rub when fully turned to the right and I hit a bump like a speed bump or offroad or turning from a high parking lot onto a lower street, only slight rubbing thought I I could probably just bend something or trim a piece of plastic because it's plastic that the tire hits. only the drivers tire. oh yea, I would recommend 4.88's, that's what I'm going to when money permits.

gear table
i don't know if anyone mentioned this but at www.4lo.com they have a gear/tire size table that might help......from the table it looks to me that 4.88 gears with 35'' tires would give you more power but prob less gas milage and the opposite for 4.56....so i guess it just depends on what you want....hope that helps

Here ya go!!
4 cyl
31's = 4.10
33's = 4.88
35 and bigger = 5.29
V6
31's = 3.73, 4.10 if you tow alot. (or whatever stock Toy's use)
33's = 4.10
35's = 4.88
37's+ = 5.29.
This stuff is what I have seen to be the most used combos.

Go 4.88's. 5.29's are too low for daily driving. Plus 4.88's are a more durable gearset so they'll last you longer. the only exception to this is if you have a 4cyl and you might go up to 35's. In that case stick with your gears you have now and re-gear when you get the 35's.

Engine and transmission go a long way in figuring this out.
If you are going to go to 35's, then 5.29's would be worth a look if you have the stock transfer case.
If you are going to stick with 33's, have a 5 speed, have a V-6, or plan to add dual cases, then 4.88's should be fine.
I have 5.29's with 33's behind a V-6 with an auto. I can easily do 75 while still getting good mileage.
Throw those calculators out the window, they only deal with diameter, not increased mass or rolling resistance.

ok what is happening when i switch to a lower gear? Is it making less effort for the motor to spin oversized tires? Does going to a lower gear affect top speed? also is it ok to use 4wd if i just change the rear diff to 4.88?
