I’ve read a lot of recent and older posts on AT tires for my 2nd gen, and it’s come down to the BFG All Terrain T/A versus the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos. I am leaning toward Revos, since I spend a lot more time on the road than off, but when I do go offroad I want something better than my Long Trails. The thing is, I am thinking of going with 32x11.50s this time, which aren’t available in Revos. My question is whether I will notice a large improvement in offroad capability between 31x10.50s and the 32s, enough to make it worthwhile? I know they’ll look cooler , but do the pros outweigh the cons, the cons being the cost, my engine having to work slightly harder, and the additional slop I’ll have to clean off the sides of my truck?

FWIW... take a look at the Dueler ATs (non-revos). I ran them in the 32/11.5-15 variety for about 45k miles and they were great on and off road.

i've read elsewhere that 32x11.5 is the biggest you can fit on a stock 2nd gen without rubbing, that true?

I am debating this same question. I currently run Cooper Discover LT 31 X 10.5 X 15 and they perform very well on and off road. My runner likes the 31 tires when in 4wd and the crawl power is good. I only use 4wd/low when
neogotiating an obstacle - 4 wd/ high is used the most. I am only considering the 32's becuase of some added clerance at the center cross member. Daily driving and on the road - I would prefer to stay with the 31's.

Did you get the Downey springs yet ? Have you installed them ?

That's what I've read, too, and that 32x11.50s fit on the 15x7 stock alloys. I cut my wheels all the way and crawled underneath to look, and there's plenty of room.

32s will fit fine on stock 15x7s. I ran them for about 45k miles before bumping up to 33/12.5-15s on the same rims.

The additional clearance is really almost negligible -- the additional ride height would only be 1/2", right? That's why I wonder if I'm making much ado about nothing.
No, the springs haven't arrived yet dunno why. I was hoping to see the springs and shocks both arrive this week so I can get at 'em. I guess I should track them.

You also mentioned you had run non-revos about 15k miles. Just curious, what 32s did you run 45k miles?

That was a typo - the non revos are what I ran for about 45k. I'll fix it in the other post, sorry.

My BFG AT TA/KOs have never let me down on my 2nd gen '95. They are great for all seasons/weather/surfaces. As far as the sizing- I went up to the 32x11.5's for a trip to Colorado and my gas mileage went down over 30% on the highway due to the overdrive constantly jumping in and out of gear even on slight hills. The 32's are fine for around town and on the trail but you will most likely want to regear to reap the full benefits. If cost is an issue I'd stay with the 31x10.5's.

If you want a wider footprint for off-road simply air-down and that will give you the extra traction you are looking for without sacrificing your gearing. The BFG AT TA/KO's have a better sidewall that the others so take that also into consideration.

See, that's exactly the kind of information I need to know, and I knew I could get it here. Highway miles are hard enough with a 3.0 without making it worse. As great as they would look and as much as they might add to offroad performance (which it doesn't seem would be that much), I don't want to make it any more difficult to haul a load in my runner on the highway. Thanks for sharing.

This is what I was looking for as well !
The 31's aired down to 15 lbs work great for wheeling and the gear ratio of the runner likes it to ! The 3.0 does not work hard to wheel - I climb and neogotiate and stay the hell out of the mud - mud sucks and is expensive to remove !

I may run across a different set of wheels / larger tires that could be used for wheeling only - not that hard to swap wheels before a trip. For the moment I am staying with the 31's and will continue with my rear locker plans.

I have a 2nd generation 4runner and I think Im going to switch to 32's.I put my buddies 33's on for kicks the other day, and they fit, but rubbed a lot. I will probably put BJ spacers and coil spacers on so I dont rub a lot offroad. I would probably have to regear if I wanted to run those 33's anyways. I have 275,000 miles in the original 3.0 and still get pretty good gas mileage.(17 or 18 here at high altitude) My only question is if I should get Mud terrains or All terrains. Im afraid I will lose to much punch moving up a tire size & going to mud terrains. What do you guys think?

Dragon is yours an auto or 5-speed? Do you know what gearing you have now?

Ok, from ;my experience. I installed 32x11.50 a/t's on at the stock height. I had slight rubbing only at full turn of the wheels on my front valance. This was without me ever touching the torsion bars. I believe if you were to turn up the torsion bars then you would not have any rubbing.

mine is not stock height (see sig), but auto, 4.56 gears, and 32x11.5 MTRs. they rub a bit with wheels at full turn, but not bad at all. i honestly can't tell ANY difference on the highway between the 32s and my old 31s. actually, my old 31s were so completely shot that it's, literally, "all good."

Glad to know that, Crawler -- my BFGs are nearly worn out. But I'm not driving the Runner much right now (got a Company truck) and am not a free wheeling spender at the moment. But when I do get new shoes I'll go for the 32x11.5s!
