3.4 Obd wiring & studdering acceleration help
I'm having 2 problems with my 4runner. The engine is a 96 3.4.
1st: when I push the gas pedal more than about a 3rd of the way I get really bad studdering and it kind of bogs down instead of accelerating quickly. My Check engine light came on and I want to pull the code(s). I'm thinking it could be this SECO cluth disk (bought off Fleabay, supposed to be o.e.m. but only disk cover was Aisin), but it could also be somthing with the fuel delivery. I'm not sure. It doesn't rev high or anything and it does it in every gear. In Neutral it revs without hesitation but when I'm driving I have to feather the gas pedal.
2nd: I hooked up the ObdII connector so I could pull the code but it kept saying connection error when I tried to pull the codes. There a re 4 wires
Pin #2- data
pin#4-ground
pin#5-ground
pin#16-12v(10amp fused)
I ran pin 16 to the battery via a fuse. Pins 4 & 5 are grounded to the chasis, not sure if they should both be grounded to the chasis. Pin 2 thows me off some. I have it running to pin#19 of the 22 pin connector that plugs into my 96 4runner ecm. It looks like it's also supposed to be spliced off of the E1 signal from data link connector 1, so I spliced it. If anyone has done their own wiring or knows what I'm talking about could you lend me a hand. I called ORS but Mike was busy so I'm not sure when or if he'll call back. I may see if I can rent a scanner so I can play with it.

So you are hooking an OBD II scan tool to the vehicle and it is reading error? Getting another to test would be a good idea to verify whether it is the tool or the wiring. But in the mean time you could jump (I believe) TE and E1 on the OBD I connector (in the engine compartment). The actual indicator light will blink in succession. It may blink X amount of times followed by a pause and then blink X amount of times followed by a greater pause. For example if #1 X was 2 and #2 X was 4 it would be 24. Then research the number and that will tell you your code.
As for the hesitation. I used to have a 96 4Runner with the 5VZ, did about the same thing. Ended up being a coilpack. I've also experienced this when the air intake tube has been cracked. Just a few things of many that I've come across at work. But before throwing guesses pulling the code would isolate the issue to a certain area and make diagnosing it 100X easier! Good luck

The Toyota is ISO: 7 is data, 15 proprietary data (ignore for most software), 5 -ground (signal) , 16 +12power

I went off of this thread

Mine is a 96. I can swap the pin #2 to #7 if that will help.
I think I may have solved the problem. Silly me, I connected a ground wire wire to the data pin and didn't ground the shield in the wire. Whoops! I will try to run the diag. again tommorrow.
I tried to get a loaned obd2 scanner from autozone and it was $150! I would have gotten it but the lazy employee couldn't find any 1 of the 3 scanners that the computer said they had. Oh well tommorrows another day.

I solved both problems today. The connector worked and it gave me a p0301 code: 1st cylinder misfire. It ended up being the coil pack and it cost $100 at the stealership. The acceleration feels better than it has ever been. Thanx
