I don't think there is a difference in the exhaust manifold design between these engines/models. The reason I say that is because the Taco has an EGR system, and the 4Runner does not - but, the 4R has an EGR block-off plate. That tells me Toyota used the same cast. Now, does an EGR system generate more power? I doubt it makes any difference, but it is a glaring difference between the two.

My 98 Taco had the same exhaust set-up as my 96 4R stock. So, my thinking is it isn't the exhaust system. However, the Taco's do sound slightly louder stock when they drive away. So I don't get it. Maybe a different muffler design?

What we can observe, therefore say scientifically, is that the Taco has an EGR system and the 4R does not. Also, the Taco is slightly louder.

Actually guys, I disagree with you.
The difference is in the intake, not so much the exhaust.
The 4Runner intake is more restrictive/baffled to cut noise.

The intake mods that block off the plastic molded resonators and cutting open the air filter box gets you your 7 hp back.
It also increase the intake noise dramatically.

Customers of vehicles expect the 4Runner to be quieter then the trucks.

This is just what I have believed for the past several years.

Regards
Mike
